Whisky, or whiskey, is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented cereal grains. The grains from which this beverage is made include barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, buckwheat or wheat. Whisky is a beverage of Irish origin, where it was most likely first produced by monks. It is also worth noting the spelling of the word whisky. The US and Ireland produce whiskey, while the rest of the globe uses the spelling whisky. The pronunciation itself has no differences in it.

How is Blended Whisky made?

Blending whisky has its origins around the 1860s. And it was created to, in a sense, temper the stronger liquors. Some whiskey was too strongly flavored for everyday drinking and blending it with other liquors resulted in a softer tasting drink.
The process of making Blended Whisky itself has several stages. First, the grains are soaked to germinate them and extract enzymes. In the next step, the grains are dried to stop the germination process. Interestingly, in Scotland, the drying process is done with smoke from fired peat, which gives the Blended Whisky there its characteristic smoky character. The next step is mashing, which means grinding the malt and rinsing it with water at a certain temperature. The rinsing process is done three times and each successive rinse has a higher water temperature. The next step is fermentation, which will produce ethanol. The ethanol has to be column distilled and then diluted with a little water and poured into oak barrels, in which this Blended Whisky will be matured for a further minimum of three years.

Types of Blended Whisky

Due to the fact that Blended Whisky is a mixture of several, a dozen or even dozens of spirits, it is difficult to talk about the types into which it can be divided. Alternatively, we can distinguish countries of production. For example, in the US Blended Whiskey is made from a blend of an appropriate number of distillates, but with a predominance of Rye Whiskey or Corn Whiskey. In addition, Blended Whiskey produced in the US must be matured in a barrel for at least 2 years and also have more than 80% alcohol. Irish Blended Whiskey, for example, has a different barrel ageing time, maturing in a barrel for 3 years. In addition to the US and Ireland, Blended Whisky is also produced in Scotland, Japan, Canada, India and France.

Master Blender

Who exactly is a Master Blender ? It is a person with great knowledge and talent for creating whisky. The Master Blender must be characterized by an incredible sense of taste and smell. He must even be sensitive to aromas and flavors. In addition, he must have technical aptitude and be creative. To become a Blending Team Member, one must be qualified. During the qualification of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, the candidate undergoes tests on the sense of smell. The most important thing in this situation is a good nose. The profession of Master Blender is considered a prestigious profession. There are not many Master Blenders around the world. In order to become one, it takes many years of study, tests, training or projects to expand knowledge in whisky and beyond, as well as practice alongside professionals already trained in this field. The main tasks of a Master Blender include creating new and attractive blends of whisky and also making sure that the whisky already created meets standards and tastes identical to previous batches of whisky under that label.

Taste of Blended Whisky

First of all, the taste of Blended Wh isky will be milder than, for example, Single Malt, which will be very distinct and intense in flavor. For some this will be a disadvantage and for others it may be an advantage. Blended Whiskey will be ideal for various types of drinks, where using Single Malt for drinks would be termed a profanation of Whiskey.

Prices of Blended Whiskey

On store shelves we can find various types of whiskey in different price ranges, starting from 30 zlotys to 50 zlotys, then reaching for the popular 50-100 zlotys segment, with higher quality exceeding the 100 zlotys ceiling, to spend even more than 200 zlotys or even 1000 zlotys for the best ones. We can also find many drinks at discount prices in outlet stores. As you can see, the price of blended whisky are very diverse and everyone will find something at a price convenient for themselves. When starting your adventure with whisky, it is worth starting with those liquors with lower prices and over time and experience, raise your price bar, tasting whisky from higher and higher price shelves. It is worth remembering that Blended Whiskey is a great gift idea, especially since many of them come in attractive decorative packaging.
