The origin of Glera is not clearly defined, but there have been reports that the strain originated in the small town of Prosecco located not far from the Italian border with Slovenia. The first mention of the cultivation of the Glera strain in the Veneto region, most likely appeared around 1754

.Glera's historical backgroundFor

many years, the Glera strain was called Prosecco, but it was decided that this name should only be used to denote the appellation. With this decision, as of 2009, the name of the Glera strain, which had been in use before, back in Roman times, was officially reverted. Prosecco, on the other hand, is a name of geographical origin that is reserved only for sparkling wines produced in the Veneto region

.Characteristics of GleraThe

Glera grape

variety

comes in three different variants. Glera Lunga, Glera Tonda and Glera Nostrana. Glera is a strain that ripens late, is also susceptible to all kinds of fungal diseases and does not tolerate drought very well. It is required that the soil in which Glera is grown be well water-retaining. This variety, is a "prolific" variety, but its prolificacy can result in a lack of distinct aromas. This depends on the location of the vineyards. If the vineyards are located on the Veneto plains and the crop yield is not very controlled, the grapes taste neutral and less concentrated. If, on the other hand, the vineyard is located on slopes and the vines are well exposed and controlled, the fruit can yield a very aromatic wine.

Wines resulting from Glera, are characterized by high acidity and low alcohol levels. In addition, in most cases they are lightly sparkling (frizzante) or fully sparkling (spumante) wines. It is rare for Glera to produce still wines (tranquillo). Wines made from this grape variety are produced using the Charmat method, or tank method. It consists in the fact that the second fermentation takes place in a stainless steel tank, and not as in the case of the traditional (champagne) method, where the second fermentation takes place in bottles.

The beverage created from this variety will be very delicate, slender, crisp, refreshing and rich in aromas of white flowers, apple, pear or lemon.

Glera wine is a wine for every occasion. It will work well as an aperitif, a toast, as well as on an ordinary hot day to "sip" with friends.

Sparkling wines created from the Glera strain are treated like white wines. They will be ideal with a variety of salads, lean fish, seafood, sushi or soft cheeses. It will also pair well with mildly acidic fruits and desserts. The wine should be served well chilled, preferably between 6?C - 8?C, in a glass with a tall and narrow bowl.
