Bordeaux region

Bordeaux is divided into two parts by the River Zyronde. The left side of the region is dominated by the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal, while the right side is dominated by Merlot. The other major red varieties that make Bordeaux wines are Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are largely responsible for the white wines, which complement each other to create excellent wines in such appellations as Pessac-Leognan, or Sauternes, famous among sweet wine enthusiasts.

The most important appellations

Bordeaux wines are famous above all for their prestigious appellations, from which come very good and sometimes outstanding wines that delight consumers from all over the world. Among the most important appellations, it is worth mentioning Haut Medoc, Margaux, Pauillac, St-Estephe, St-Emilion, or Pomerol, where exceptional dry wines are made, and it is also worth mentioning Sauternes and Barsac, appellations famous for their excellent sweet wines made with grapes blighted by noble mold.

Style of Bordeaux wines

The Bordeaux region is famous for red wines characterized by intense flavor, full of red and dark fruits, full structure with pronounced acidity and tannins. The bouquet of aromas manifests blackberries, plums, as well as some earthy and spice aromas - especially if the wines have been aged in barrel.

Bordeaux wines boast remarkable quality, making them ideal wines for long-term cellar aging, where they will gain maturity and reach their full potential. This also makes Bordeaux wines popular with investors who keep bottles in their cellars that multiply in value over time.

Bordeaux wines accompanied by meals

Such characteristics of a wine naturally beg for a properly composed dish to accompany it. Bordeaux red wines will go well with meats - both red meats such as beef steaks or pork, as well as with more delicate offerings - chicken or duck. They are also excellent choices for tasting with a board of aged cheeses and cured meats.

Prices of Bordeaux wines

The Bordeaux region, due to its location, outstandingly favorable terroir and unblemished reputation, consequently carries with it prized wines. Both their quality, production costs and land prices result in wines that like to look deeper into the wallet. Basic Bordeaux wines are within a few tens of zlotys, nevertheless for more prestigious bottles from prized appellations the limit of 100 zlotys will be exceeded. For outstanding wines, the price can reach the amount of thousands of zlotys, which will further multiply it after adequate maturation time.
