Grain Whisky Production

Scotch Grain Whisky is usually distilled twice, it happens that some Whiskies are distilled three times. Created from any type of grain, it is traditionally distilled in alembics, although distillation columns are now also used. Scotch Grain Whisky is aged in casks for 3 years. It can be sold as Single Grain Whisky if it comes from only one distillery. On the other hand, if blends of grain whiskies come from more than one distillery we call it Blended Grain Whisky.

Different faces of Grain Whisky

Grain Whiskies have many advantages. The first is a milder taste and softer finish than Single Malt Whisky. Another advantage, attractive to producers and customers alike, is that blended whiskies can be produced in very large batches at very large distilleries, tend to be less expensive for the distiller and cheaper for consumers. Blended Grain whiskies have become the world's most recognized Scotch whisky names. Irish whiskey tends to be milder than Scotch. This is because they undergo a three-fold distillation process - distillates that are more refined, i.e. finer, than their Scottish counterparts go into barrels. Traditionally, Grain Whisky is distilled in alembics although nowadays distillation columns are also used. Irish Grain Whisky must be Produced in Ireland and aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 3 years. Irish Single Grain whiskey is a grain whiskey, usually corn whiskey produced at a single distillery. Grain whiskey combined with Malt whiskey creates a Blended Whiskey blend. American Grain is divided by the type of grain used in the mash. A grain mash consisting of at least 51% corn is Bourbon Whiskey, 80% corn is Corn Whiskey. Tennessee Whiskey is Bourbon character filtered through charcoal from sugar maple. Rye Whiskey is 51% rye, 80% wheat can be found in Wheat Whiskey. On the other hand, at 51% malted rye, Rye Malt Whiskey is created.

Wine.co.uk's favorite Grain Whiskey

A Scottish classic from the Scottish Highlands region. Tweeddale Grain of Thruth is a 50% wheat and 50% barley grain whiskey. It acquires its character during maturation in bourbon casks, from where it is transferred to sherry casks for the final stage of "finishing." Among the dominant aromas we find vanilla, lemon peel with eucalyptus and a touch of fennel. On the palate, extremely slender and pleasant to taste, the flavor bouquet offers notes of tropical fruits, rhubarb with hazelnuts and toffee. The oaky finish leaves a slightly bittersweet aftertaste. Also a gem is the American Koval Four Grain Whiskey is a whiskey produced by Koval Distillery that is a blend of 4 different grains. Koval Distillery is an innovative and unique distillery that is exceptional in every way - from its great attention to quality and ecology, to its unique production technologies and production of limited and small batch spirits, to its use of innovation and experimentation and unprecedented combinations of spirits in bottles. Four Grain is a blend of oat mash, malted barley, wheat and rye. It was aged in a heavily fired new Minnesota barrel with a small capacity (113 liters). On the nose, the aroma of banana, cornflakes, cookies, sweet candy and vanilla strikes at the outset. On the palate, it surprises with cinnamon and fig notes, maple syrup and hints of oak barrel. The finish is mildly spicy and expressive. The grains used in the production of whiskey come only from local farmers who have grown them taking care of the environment.
