Cognac - productionCognac

is made from white wine, which contains 90% of grapes of Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche or Colombard strains. One week after it is made, the wine is distilled twice in copper alembics, resulting in eau-de-vie ("water of life"). It is then aged for at least two years in oak barrels until it is finally subjected to coupage, or blending. Let's remember, the "Water of Life" from a single barrel is not yet cognac. How the products are blended depends entirely on the producer, who is very often guided by experience and aroma from the barrel.

Cognac - tastingA good

cognac is one that stimulates the senses and shows the depth of flavor. However, for this to happen, we should follow certain standards when tasting. First of all, cognac is exquisitely presented in a cracked glass, called a "cognac glass." We warm the glass in our hands, in order to release the aromas. Then make circular motions with your hand to stir its contents and discover all the richness of cognac's aroma. Haste is not advisable - sip rather than drink at once. Cognac can be served in many ways. It goes perfectly with desserts or coffee. It goes well with sushi, baked salmon or seafood. Cocktails are made on its base, nevertheless they are younger vintages. The older they are, the better they taste as a solitary beverage after a meal.

Cognac - agingIf

a good cognac is to stand the test of time, the bottle should not be opened, and the seal itself should not be tampered with. It should be stored standing up, in a dry and darkened place. After opening, it is worth ensuring that no air gets inside the bottle, so that you can enjoy this liquor for many months.

Cognac - typesThere

are three basic types of cognac depending on the length of its aging, they are marked on the bottle with the following symbols:
  • V.S. - Very Special - is the youngest of the cognac family. It is aged in oak barrels for at least 2 years. The color of the cognac is clear and golden, the aroma has notes of plum, peach and citrus. An example of a cognac from this family is Frapin V.S. Cognac.
  • V.S.O.P. - Very Special Old Pale, is an older cognac, aged between 4 and 10 years. It also has a slightly higher price than its younger representative. Both types of cognac are best enjoyed in the form of drinks and cocktails. A worthy example of a VSOP cognac is Frapin V.S.O.P. Cognac is a cognac created from only the finest eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne region.
  • X.O. (Extra Old) - is the oldest and best cognac. It is usually between 10 and even 30 years old. It is ideal for sipping on its own and will appeal to any connoisseur. An example of this type of cognac is Hennessy X.O Cognac.
There are also older cognacs with the unique designation of Extra, Napoleon that are over 30 or even 100 years old. This type of cognac is intended for discerning gourmets of this type of liquor.

Cognac - priceCognac

is a special type of alcohol, which has already won many hearts and palates of gourmets from all over the world. Cognac prices depend on the reputation of the producer and its history and traditions. Cognac is usually more expensive than other distilled spirits, such as whiskey, because the production costs are higher. Resources such as grapes grown in specific regions (the Cognac region of France) and Limousin oak barrels are used, which increase Cognac prices.
  • V.S. - is a well-balanced cognac that sips well and mixes easily into cocktails. Its prices can range from £150 to £250.
  • V.S.O.P - More aged specimens, at least four years old, you can most often purchase such cognac at a price of 150 - 400 zł.
  • X.O - this is the best cognac if we are talking about quality, age compared to price. Thanks to the maturation process, it is ideal for sipping on its own. Of course, there are older cognacs, but the prices for liquors over 30 years are already much higher. Therefore, if we want to give someone a good cognac, without the risk of a mishap and overpaying - X.O. is the right choice, with prices ranging from PLN 250 to even several thousand, depending on the producer. If we care about buying a good cognac we should also pay attention to whether it was produced in France.
