Is cider a wine?

Although cider is often confused with wine, especially fruit wine, there is a fundamental difference between the two. Cider is made from apples, while wine is produced from grapes. The fermentation process of both beverages is similar, but they differ in the base raw material. Cider is a fermented apple beverage, which gives it a distinctive, refreshing taste, unlike wine, which has more complex and distinctive notes.

Cider is often considered a lighter-tasting drink with a lower alcohol content than wine. Depending on the type of cider, it can resemble beer or light wine, but is definitely not a variation of it. In Poland, cider has a long tradition, especially in orchard regions where apples are one of the main fruits grown on a large scale.

How much alcohol percentage does cider have?

The alcohol content of cider varies depending on the brand and the production process. The most popular ciders in Poland, typically have an alcohol content of 4-6%. This is less than in traditional wine, which often has 10-14% alcohol, but more than in most beers, which settle around 3-5% alcohol.

Ciders with a higher alcohol content can have a slightly more intense flavor and fuller texture, while lighter ciders are ideal for refreshment on hot days. Thanks to their moderate alcohol content, cider is often chosen by those looking for an alternative to stronger spirits. In addition, natural fermentation gives cider subtle apple notes that can be both sweet and dry.

When to drink cider?

Cider is a very versatile drink that can be drunk in different situations and seasons. In Poland, cider is most often consumed in the summer, when its refreshing taste perfectly quenches thirst during warm days. Thanks to its natural freshness and delicate apple notes, cider goes well with summer meals such as salads, grilled dishes and light snacks.

However, cider is not just reserved for summer. More and more people are also reaching for cider in the fall, especially when seasonal ciders, made from late varieties of apples, hit the market.

Cider is also an excellent drink for various social gatherings. Its light texture and moderate alcohol content make it ideal for gatherings with friends, parties or picnics. With a variety of flavors - from dry to sweet - there is something for everyone. Cider can be drunk on its own or as a side dish.
