There are also people who simply love the sweet taste and appreciate the complexity of red sweet wines - and that certainly cannot be denied.

How red sweet wines are made

Grapes are harvested, crushed and then fermented. During the fermentation process, grape sugar is converted into alcohol, but stopping fermentation early allows more grape sugar to remain in the finished product, resulting in a sweeter red wine with a lower alcohol content.

Types of sweet red wines

Sweet red wines can be sparkling, still or fortified. Among the sparkling offerings we find Brachetto d'Acqui, which comes from the Piedmont region and contains notes of strawberry candy, cherry jam and rose. Lambrusco sourced from Emilia-Romagna is also worth a look, captivating with ripe berries, cherry filling and violets.

Sweet, quiet red wines, unlike their dry counterparts, do not have strongly noticeable tannin. Thus, starting out sweet, you can feel comfortable sipping Rosé or Moscato and eventually move on to Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fortified red wine is characterized by a higher alcohol content (16%-23%), and among them, of course, we should mention the world-famous and highly regarded Porto, which comes from the Douro region in northern Portugal. It is characterized by aromas of dark berries, cocoa and anise.

Sweet red wine - occasions

Nothing compares to a glass of sweet red wine! Especially when you want to celebrate small successes or are planning a romantic dinner for two, such as during Valentine's Day. Special moments won't be so special without a bottle of good liquor. It should also be mentioned that in the case of fortified red wines, you may be tempted to buy a good bottle for a gift. Such wine can linger longer, therefore it will be a great gift for an 18th birthday or wedding. In a few years, the gifted person will be able to open the bottle and immerse in memories.

Sweet red wine - pairing with food

It is accepted that sweet wines should always be paired with sweet food (hence the term "dessert wines"). It is also said that the wine should always be sweeter than the dish. But it is also worth considering the combination of sweet and savory. There are two overarching philosophies. Either compare by matching flavor notes, or contrast by using a sweet wine, for example, which will add flavor and aroma missing from the dish.
