How is port wine made?

Porto wine is produced in Portugal. Contrary to appearances, it is not made in the city of the same name, but in a region located in the Douro River valley in northern Portugal. It is probably the first separate and protected wine region in the world.

Porto wine is most often made from varietals that originate precisely from the region located in the Douro Valley: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, although up to 100 varietals are permitted for its production. When the alcohol content of this wine rises to 7%, fermentation is stopped by adding strong alcohol. Such fortified Portuguese wine is then aged. This method was invented by accident. As a result of Britain's long-standing dispute with France, English merchants had to look for a supplier of wine other than French. They began to buy products from Portugal. However, the long transport of bottles by ship caused Portuguese wine to spoil and become undrinkable. When they began to add strong alcohol to it, it turned out that such Porto wine was not only able to stand the test of time. In addition, it gained an interesting flavor and aroma.

Types of Porto - how to choose a good Porto wine?

There are many types of fortified wine. First of all, like the "traditional" wine coming from Portugal, it can be white or red, sweet, semi-sweet and also dry. In addition, the label of the bottle can be LBV, Tawny or Ruby. These are other types of Porto distinguished by the way it is produced and matured.

Ruby Portuguese wine is the basic version. Porto Ruby wine is made from grapes harvested in the Douro Valley, aged in large wooden barrels and bottled after an average of two years of storage.

Tawny fortified Portuguese wine is a slightly longer-aged Porto wine than Ruby, made from grapes grown in the Douro region, stored in smaller wooden barrels, and as a result usually a bit dryer.

Vintage is a wine from the absolute best vintages, bottled after an average of two years of storage in oak barrels - this Port is aged similarly to Ruby-type Port. It is a product with aging potential, meaning the older the better.

LateBotteled Vintage Port is a Port wine that will have the LBV designation on the bottle label. The wine comes from the best vintages and is aged longer in wooden barrels. For this reason, it has a more developed bouquet. It is aged in bottle, from a single vintage, usually more dry than "vintage."

Which one to choose? It all depends on the occasion. It is accepted that dry and mildly sweet versions are served as an aperitif to strengthen the appetite before the main meal, and sweet bottled wine for dessert. In fact, any Porto wine is ideal as an elegant gift. And when it comes to choosing a bottle to suit your own taste preferences, it is best to rely on the help of specialists, for example, in a stationary store with Porto wine. In such places they will not only advise us on the right bottle. Often we will learn more about Oporto there, for example, about a unique production method that is now disappearing - trampling the grapes with our feet. However, several producers still use this method.

Porto wine to what can be served ?

Porto wine goes perfectly with strongly flavored cheeses (including blue cheese), chocolate and caramel desserts. It pairs perfectly with nuts, salted and smoked nuts, and even grilled meats in a sweet marinade. It is worth serving slightly chilled before pouring into a glass. Such an unusual combination is sure to please the palate of many gourmets.

Porto wine price - how much do you have to spend on Porto?

The price of Porto wine can vary, for example, depending on the maturation time or alcohol content. Porto wines can be seen as expensive, as they cost up to several hundred zlotys and more each. However, they can also be purchased at lower prices. So how much does Porto wine cost? The price can really vary. On Vinesia.pl, bottles of Porto are presented, with values starting from as low as 64.99 zlotys.
