How dry white wine is made

White wines are usually made from light grape varieties - although they can also be made from dark varieties. This is because the color comes from the grape skin, so skipping maceration with them will allow the wine to be light in color. Also, wines resulting from white varietals briefly macerate on the grape skins, so as to preserve the lightness and structure characteristic of white wine.

The most common varietals used to make dry white wines

Among the most common and used varietals in dry white wines we can distinguish Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc. Each of these varieties feels great in a variety of conditions, which is why we can find them all over the world - both in European countries and those of the New World.

The nature of the most popular dry white wines

The variety of varietals also provides a variety of flavors and styles, among which we can select a bottle of dry white wine according to our preferences.

Chardonnay is an extremely flexible varietal, from which we can obtain wines both fresh and fruity, as well as structured and oily with a heavy body. It is one of the few white varieties that likes to mature in oak barrels, acquiring buttery and vanilla notes.

Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, is a variety that, even in the form of dry white wine, can still surprise you with unusual sweetness of flavors in the glass. Such, for example, are the proposals of winemakers from New Zealand, where wines rich in tropical fruit aromas are created, while exuding refreshing acidity and light structure.

The perfect balance between sweetness and acidity is achieved by Riesling. The variety, famous if only for the magnificent interpretations emerging from Germany or French Alsace, is characterized by a dominant acidity that can be easily tamed by residual sugar, which the variety is also rich in. As a result, Rieslings have a full cross-section of styles - from dry and mineral through sweet and strongly fruity.

The influence of climate on dry white wines

It is no secret that the climate of the place of origin of the fruit has a huge impact on the taste of the wine. Hotter places with better sunlight will result in a higher concentration of sugar in the fruit, which will translate into structure, aromas, as well as alcohol content after fermentation. Cooler regions, on the other hand, will translate into higher acidity and lighter structure. The final flavor is also affected by the soil, age of the vines or weather variables in a given year. All this, combined with the characteristics of the selected varietal, translates into the final result in the glass.

With what foods to pair dry white wines?

There are many details to pay attention to when pairing wine with food. Aspects such as sweetness, intensity, the type of spices or sauces used, the texture of the meat and the accompaniments selected can all affect the optimal choice of wine.

Dry white wines with a lighter texture are ideal when accompanied by seafood, fish or an appetizer board full of cheese and cured meats. Fuller, more expressive offerings, on the other hand, are worth serving with white meat or fatter fish. It is also worth noting that spicier dishes prefer wines with more residual sugar.

Dry white wines - prices

Prices for dry white wines start from the threshold of the lowest values falling below 35 zlotys. For appellation and quality wines, depending on the region, producer and method of production, the price successively increases and corresponds to the particular parameters of the selected bottle.
