Even differently named in the Toro region, Tempranillo is referred to there as Tinto Fino and Tinta de Toro. The many names of this grape variety could be talked about for hours, as there are rumors that its terms could be as many as 500. Tempranillo wine can enjoy youthful expression and crisp fruit, but it reaches its full potential in barrel-aged wines, with great maturity of aromas and powerful, tannic structure. The range of flavors offered by Tempranillo wine makes us flexible in adjusting the wine to our needs - from a light wine for the evening, through well-built liquors for flavor-intensive meals, to many years of maturation in the cellar

.History of the Tempranillo varietalThe name of

the temranillo varietal comes from the word "temprano" meaning "early". This may refer to the early ripening of the fruit. There are many rumors about the origin of this grape variety. We can encounter information that the tempranillo variety was brought to Spain by Burgundian monks who made pilgrimages to Santiago di Compostela. The strain then made its way to Portugal, where at the moment it is indispensable in the production of Portugal's most popular wine, which is Porto, then it was spread to Argentina, Mexico, the USA, Australia and South Africa. We can also encounter the statement that the tempranillo strain is a mutation of two strains, we are talking about the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc varieties. DNA studies have rejected this thesis, it turned out that between these French strains and Spanish tempranillo there is no genetic link

.Characteristics of the strainTempranillo

can confidently be called the calling card of Spain, where predominantly red wines are made. Most often it is grown in such a way that the harvest cannot be done with combines. The variety is planted in a system of free-standing bushes. Grown in this form, it adapts better in dry climates. The tempranillo strain is considered a very prolific variety. All it takes is a moment of inattention and lack of control, and the wine produced will be thin and diluted. The fruit has a thin skin, making it more vulnerable to frost, moisture and mold. The best conditions for the tempranillo varietal are a balance between night and daytime temperatures. In addition, the location of the bush so that it is dried by the wind is a plus. They bud quite early and do not need much time to fully ripen. If the winemaker does not expect outstanding wines from the tempranillo varietal, the variety will be easy to grow. If, on the other hand, very good results are desired, the winemaker must be patient and consistent. This is how Albali wine, for example, is made. It is produced from the best selected grapes, which are harvested by hand, and the entire fermentation process is strictly controlled. We can find tempranillo wines in versions ranging from dry to sweet. Young tempranillo is a wine characterized mainly by intense aromas of cherries accompanied by plums, tomatoes and dried figs. In the mouth full of juicy fruitiness, a kind of lightness and joyful character. Barrelled and more mature variants will additionally manifest notes of vanilla, leather and tobacco, and on the palate will give the impression of much more structured, sublime and powerful wines. It owes its profile to comparisons to another popular varietal - Cabernet Sauvignon. Wanting to make an informed choice of tempranillo wine, one should be guided by the indications on the label. Regulations in Spain within appellations define the length of barrel aging with specific terms. One of the most famous places where excellent wines from this varietal come from is the Rioja region, where much of Spain's red wines are made. The designation Joven, defines a wine that is devoid of barrel requirements. These are then young wines intended for quick consumption. The designation Crianza tells us that the wine is aged a minimum of two years, including one year in barrel, Reserva informs us of spending a total of three years maturing, including a minimum of one year in barrel, and Gran Reserva, on the other hand, are wines resting for five years, including two years in oak. When looking for wines of outstanding quality, it is also worth following the tempranillo trail to the Ribera del Duero region, where the grape in question is referred to as Tinta Fina or Tinto del Pais. Ribera wines are widely regarded as fuller than those from Rioja. Highly regarded, they are an excellent choice for both long aging and for a special gift. For tempranillo in a simpler version, with more direct fruitiness, we can reach out to the Toro region, where the grape is commonly called Tinta de Toro, or south of Madrid, to Valdepenas, where in turn we will encounter the name Cencibel. Less obliging in its character, but also in its price, these wines will be ideal for quiet evenings to enjoy on their own
