The most popular, that is, red wine varietals grown around the world are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir. However, we encourage you to cover and sample red wines that have been created from local vineyards: Barbera, Gamay, Grenache, Malbec, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tempranillo or Zinfandel. It is also worth mentioning that red wines are often coupés, that is, a combination of several different varietals, for example, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the lightest wines are made from Pinot Noir and Gamay varieties, as they have very thin skins and light flesh. The darkest, from Zinfandel, Malbec, Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, whose skins are distinguished by intense pigment.

Aromas and taste of red wine

The character of a wine is determined by such characteristics as fleshiness, dryness, tannicity or acidity. Aromatic wines contain accents of herbs, spices, flowers and dark and red fruits. The most common aromas are plum and cherry. Black currant also appears, characteristic of wines matured from Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir or Syrah varietals. In good quality red wines you can discover aromas of coffee, and in others currant, strawberry, raspberry, vanilla and spice. The dryness or sweetness of a wine is determined by the amount of sugar that remains in the wine after fermentation. Red wines with a trace amount of this product are strongly tannic, causing an astringent sensation on the tongue. Most people describe them as "tart." The length of fermentation and level of dryness often determine the alcohol level as well. Wines in which some residual sugar is left by interrupting fermentation early have lower levels, while those without residual sugar have higher levels.

How to test and discover red wines?

Weaker red wines will be transparent, while strong wines will have a deep color and rich aroma. In doing so, they will leave clear traces on the walls of the glass. After stirring the wine in the glass and then smelling it, there will certainly be noticeable, familiar aromas. When tasting, especially according to French connoisseurs, the most important thing about a good red wine is the taste the wine leaves in the mouth. The longer we feel it, the better. Good red wines with a richer flavor bouquet are sure to leave an interesting impression, even if they seem heavy at first. Such wines include, for example, the northern Rhône Valley, a French region specializing in the internment of the Syrah varietal. On the other hand, looking for a touch of sweetness in a deep wine, it is worth reaching for Amarone della Valpolicella. In addition, the dominant aroma in Amarone is often dried fruit - which is due to the fact that it is made using the appassimento method - drying the grapes before further production.

Although it's the white wines that usually serve as the perfect refreshment for summer (the Loire Valley and the Sauvignon Blanc there is a "must-have" for summer!), it's also worth giving the classic European Pinot Noir a chance. Northern Italy - more specifically, the Alto Adige area, or France - in this case Burgundy or Alsace, yield fantastic wines from this varietal, exuding refreshing acidity and light structure that is just right for a warm afternoon. It is also worth remembering that German Pinot Noir bears a different name on the label - Spatburguner.

Subtle palates, on the other hand, will be satisfied by a red semi-dry wine, in which the residual sugar tempers the acidity and its sweetness - delicate and subtle - leaves a pleasant finish. These are also often extremely aromatic and fruity wines.

We should also remember that red wine is served at room temperature. Under such conditions, the charkater of the wine brings out all its best qualities, especially served in appropriate glasses, which help concentrate the bouquet of aromas.

What dishes should we serve red wine with?

We should consider the type of wine paired with food only in terms of color, but also in terms of its taste. Delicate red wines are recommended to pair with poultry, fried or sauced fish and appetizers (cold cuts, delicate cheeses). Glasses of mature liquor will go well with red meat, game and cheeses. Sweet wines go well with desserts and are ideal as an aperitif.

Red wine has abeneficial effect on the pairing of food full of fat due to the tannins contained in the wine. This is why it is best to choose fatty meats, such as beef, for intensely tannic red wine.

Quality vs. price

The price of red wine depends on the vintage, cultivation method, production costs, maturation potential and awards won. When shopping, it's worth considering the occasion. If you are buying wine for a gift, look for something that has an interesting appearance, an exotic origin, is full of different flavors or there is a possibility of storing such wine for years. Choose a good red wine for dinner or an evening spent at home based primarily on the taste and structure of the wine.
