Not surprisingly, when looking to buy a bottle of exceptional spirits, customers often opt specifically for wine from France.

French wines - types

The type of French wine is determined on the basis of the region from which it comes, while the most popular distinction is made on the basis of terroir, i.e. a set of natural factors, such as soil, climate, sunshine, temperature, sum of precipitation, which determine the quality of the vineyard. It is worth mentioning here the grand cru designation on labels, which determines the harvest from the best plots.

The most popular red French wines are made from the varietals grenache, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, carignan, cabernet franc, syrah, and pinot noir. Among white French wines, the most popular varietals are chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, melon de bourgogne, and sémillon.

French wines - wine regions

The most important wine regions are located in southern and central France. Among them we can distinguish:

  • Alsace (white wine production)
  • Beaujolais
  • Bordeaux (production of legendary red wines of central France)
  • Burgundy (production of light red wines of the pinot noir type and white wines of the chardonnay variety)
  • Loire Valley
  • Rhone Valley (mainly strong red wines)
  • Jura and Savoy
  • Corsica
  • Languedoc
  • Provence
  • Roussillon
  • Sud-Ouest (e.g., Gascony)
  • Champagne (world-famous sparkling wines)

The best wine from France

Asking in the store about good French wines, we can get many answers. It would be difficult to point out one that is the hallmark of this country. Elegant champagnes, fashionable Chablis, excellent Alsatian Rieslings, distinctive Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, sweet Sauternes or Chateuaneuf du Pape - called the favorite wine of the popes - are made here.

It is the most diverse wine country. Just as heterogeneous is its climate - from cool Champagne in the north, to the Bordeaux region in central France, to the warm, sunny Lanvedoc-Roussillon region in the south. Therefore, there is no single style of wine here.

Wine from France, or did you know.

  • In France, wine consumption per year is about 14 times higher than in Poland. The average Frenchman drinks more than 40 liters of wine, while a Pole drinks 3 liters.
  • The highest ranked are French wines with AOC (Appellation Origine Controlee) status. In their case, appellation law regulates: grape varieties, yield per hectare, vinification method and even alcohol level. In addition to AOC wines, there are regional (Vin de Pays) and table wines.

  • In 17 communes, vineyards are allowed to use the name grand cru on their labels - this denotes the most prestigious parcels, and 38 communes have the status - premier cru.
  • France gave birth more than 30 years ago to the popular Beaujolais Nouveau festival in November, celebrated today around the world. Every year on the third Thursday in November, the celebration takes place with a glass of young wine from Burgundy, a wine from central France

  • Many popular grape varieties are actually from France, including merlot, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay.

  • A great enthusiast of French wines is the United States, which to this day loves, for example, the famous Chablis, and itself also refers to the European cradle of wine by producing high-end Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir

French wines - what prices to prepare for?

Although for many years the status of the most expensive wine in the world belonged to the French wine Château Pétrus, this does not mean that wines from France have to be expensive. Bottles can vary in value. At Wine.co.uk, we present wines of varying value, starting as low as PLN 29.99. That's how much Nos Racines Sauvignon Blanc costs, which is an excellent everyday wine. In addition, it is one of the most popular wines.

French wines, however, are most often chosen as gifts. This is because there is a belief that the combination of wine and France is an excellent quality, and then we especially care about it. Such an ideal gift could be, for example, Joseph Drouhin Petit Chablis. This is a wine made from the internationally popular Chardonnay variety. Compared to other fruity wines from this varietal, this one stands out in addition to the minerality characteristic of Burgundy. This is an example of a French dry wine priced above PLN 100. Among the French wines above PLN 100, champagnes also deserve special attention, which for many years have accompanied us during important occasions and celebrations. However, it is worth mentioning that good champagnes up to 200 zł are also available on the market.

Wines, France - or how to choose?

And what French wines to choose for yourself? It is worth paying attention to such things as the species of French wine, label, name, bottle, year, producer and price of French wine. Be guided by the color and sugar content that is right for you. Also remember that the most appreciated wines are bottled on the premises of a particular vineyard. The label of such wines should say: Mis en bouteille au château, Mis en bouteille au domaine or Mis en bouteille à la propriété. The names of the most famous French wines suggest the area from which the wines originate, and this definitely affects their character and aroma. We also suggest paying attention to the head of the bottle. The foil covering the cork should be green - a sign that the wine was bottled on the territory of the vineyard in question. On the label you will look in vain for information about the varietal - this is one of the characteristics of French wine - but you will find other information that will help you choose. When looking for a wine with high aging potential, it is worth looking for wines aged in oak barrels.

Not only wine - alcohol from central France

In France you will also find world-famous, outstanding alcohol - Cognac ("cognac") and Armagnac ("armagnac"). The name comes from the regions located in the central part of the country, where they are made and only they can be so titled(adequately as in the situation with champagne). The Armagnac region is located south of Cognac. Produced through a distillation process, they acquire their style by aging in oak barrels before finally being bottled. Special designations on the bottle (VS, VSOP, XO) indicate how long the alcohol has been aged in the barrel. For the production of Armagnac and Cognac, grapes are used, or more precisely, a coupage of several varietals - Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Montils and Semillon.

These are liquors with notes of caramel, toffee, leather and spices. Because of their pleasant character, many longer-aged spirits of this type have a slightly sweeter taste. Its exquisite taste and prestigious region of origin make it an ideal beverage for connoisseurs, but also a perfect gift for anyone who likes to enjoy quality spirits.

Fracusspirits also worth noting is Calvados, which, unlike the spirits just discussed, is produced as an apple distillate.

France also has no shortage of outstanding liqueurs, including the famous Triple Sec orange liqueur - so readily used in numerous cocktails. The most popular drink based on it is the Margarita. Black currant li queur - creme de cassis - is also very popular. The French prepare from it "Le Kir", which is a mixture of this liqueur with white wine Bourgogne Aligote.

Alcohol from France is characterized by depth and exceptional taste, so it can also be used as a side dish. The sweet liquor will work well at least with desserts and meals with a chocolate and nutty character.
