Before we get into deciphering what Blended Malt Whiskey specifically means, let's recall some flagship information about whiskey, or maybe whisky?

Whisky and WhiskeyThe difference

in the spelling of whisky and whiskey comes from the two cultural circles where whiskey was traditionally produced, i.e. Ireland and Scotland. Whiskey is traditionally produced by the Irish and Americans, while whiskey is produced in the rest of the world. Whisky is an alcoholic beverage distilled from fermented cereal grains, such as malted barley, barley, malted rye, rye, wheat, buckwheat, among others. Malted barley is labeled Malt Whisky, while other grains are labeled Grain Whisky. Whisky/Whiskey is the English translation of the Gaelic word uisge, which meant water. From Latin, the distilled liquor was known as aqua vitae - water of life, and according to this principle, the Scots say that what whisky won't cure there is no cure! Whisky is aged in barrels. Most commonly used for this purpose are barrels fired from the inside of oak wood - European and American white oak. The other two ingredients needed to make whisky are chief and yeast. Barrels in which other spirits have been made are often used for production. Each whisky then acquires a different character. Bourbon barrel: gives vanilla, caramel, coconut notes. Port cask: sweet notes of dried fruits, chocolate and spices. Sherry barrel: notes of nuts, almonds, dark ripe fruits and spices. Sauternes barrel: notes of honey and coconut, fruit leather.

Blended Malt Whisky

Blendedmalt wh isky is a blend of Single Malt Whiskies from different distilleries, sometimes called Pure Malt or Vatted Malt. Blended malt whiskey (Vatted Malt), on the other hand, is made exclusively from malted barley, is distilled in stills, can come from multiple distilleries, and is aged a minimum of 3 years in oak barrels. To better understand Blended Malt and how it differs from other types of distilled whisky, let's add two words about Single Malt Whisky. Single Malt Whisky was created at a single distillery, uses a single type of malted grain, and may contain whiskies from different barrels and from different years, capturing the unique flavor characteristic of the distillery. Whisky with the "malt" designation is made from barley whose grains are malted in water, resulting in a germination process, which increases the grains' susceptibility to fermentation. Malted barley may be peat-smoked to produce a distinctive flavor and aroma profile. Blended Malt whisky must therefore use malted barley grain, while unmalted grains are used in the production of other types of this distillate. Blended Malt whisky is distilled in alembics and can come from multiple distilleries, aged a minimum of 3 years in barrels. Alembic distillation typical of blended malt whiskey is an artisanal and expensive process, conducted in batches in Scotland usually twice, in Ireland three times under the guidance of a master distiller - a stillman. It usually takes place in copper cauldrons.

Scottish Blended malt whisky

Scottish Blended malt whisky is usually distilled twice, it happens that some are distilled three times. By law, it must be distilled, bottled and aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks within Scotland. It is always bottled with an alcohol strength of at least 40%. All these stages must take place within Scotland. The age statement (YO-Years Old) of the whisky given on the bottle refers to the youngest component of the composition, in the absence of an age statement the whisky is at least 3 years old. Blended malt whisky should not be confused with Blended Scotch Whisky. Although the names are similar the difference is that Blended Scotch Whisky is a blend of malt and grain whisky.

Blended malt whisky production

Blended malt whisky production is not much different from the production processes of other types of whisky, the next steps are malting grain preparation/malting, fermentation with yeast, sugars turning into alcohol and the liquid distilled into a concentrated alcoholic beverage. This is followed by the maturation, blending and bottling stages.
