Wines

from the USAWine-making

in the USA does not have a very long history. The first wine from native grapes was made here in 1607, but the wine boom didn't occur until the 1960s. In addition, the country twice struggled with the phylloxera epidemic (a grapevine pest that destroyed entire vineyards), as well as Prohibition. After it came the Great Depression and World War II. Nevertheless, the U.S. is today the largest wine producer outside Europe. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the American Viticultural Area (AVA) wine appellation system was established here. It is not as restrictive as European regulations. It mainly determines what region the wine comes from. Simple names, usually from grape varietals, rule on American bottles. Wines are often single-varietal. This means that they must be made from 75% of the grapes whose name is on the label, or 85% if the AVA appellation is listed on the label. Popular European varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling are usually used for American wines.

California - the wine powerhouse in the USThe largest wine

producer in the US is California. It accounts for as much as 90% of production nationwide. The state is divided into several areas: North Coast, Rhode Island, Southern California and the Central Valley. These, in turn, into regions and counties that are the equivalent of European appellations. The most famous region, known not only in California, is Napa Valley. In 1976, wines from there beat wines from Burgundy in a blind tasting. The climate in California is subtropical-Mediterranean. There are mild, rainy winters and hot summers. It is here that the record highest air temperature on earth - 57.8 °C - has been recorded. Although the climate is hot, it is also stable and attracts winemakers from all over the world. The California Valley is considered the most fertile area in the entire world. In addition to California, popular American wines still come from states such as Washington, Oregon and New York.

The most popular American winesChardonnay

can be considered one of the most important wines in the US. Cultivation of this white varietal occupies a larger area in the United States than in France, where it originated. In America, the variety has even lived up to its own saying: "Anything But Chardonnay" meaning "Anything but Chardonnay". This was a response to the ubiquity of this wine, which at one point were mass-produced. They became so popular that there was a need for change. Today, however, the trend has reversed again and one can find the phrase "Anything but Chardonnay." When reaching for this white wine from the US, you can expect it to have sweet and exotic touches of pineapple, mango, peach. Americans often destine this wine for barrel aging, which makes you feel buttery and vanilla aromas in the glass.

Another wine that is a wine showcase of the USA is Zinfandel. In California alone, it is grown on as many as about 20,000 acres. Genetically, it is the same wine grape as the Italian Primitivo and similarly has strongly marked fruit notes: cherries and plums, as well as a sweet aftertaste of chocolate. Americans fondly call it Zin, and how popular it is is evidenced by the saying: "It's not a sin to drink a Zin" ("It's not a sin to drink Zinfandel"). It is a red grape variety, but the U.S. also produces a pink wine called White Zinfandel. The first association with Riesling is most often Germany. However, it is the US that produces the most of it in the world. You could say that it is the ambassador of this wine, and its lovers meet every three years in Seatlle for the Riesling Rendezvous.
