Manufacture of whisky

Whisky is an alcoholic beverage distilled from fermented cereal grains such as malted barley, barley, rye, malted rye, buckwheat, wheat and others. When looking for Whisky in stores, we may encounter the designations Single Malt Wh isky and Grain Whisky. The difference between the two designations is the grain from which the beverage is made. Single Malt Wh isky is made from malted barley, while Grain Whisky is made from other grains, in which case barley will not appear in the composition.

The Whisky production process is divided into five stages. The first is grain preparation, followed by mashing, or so-called mashing, then fermentation, distillation and maturation. Typically, whisky must mature in oak barrels for at least three years, but in practice many in the liquor mature much longer.

Barrel for whisky

European oak and American white oak are used to make the barrels in which whisky is matured. The barrel can be used more than once, but this translates into the quality of the resulting whisky. Barrels from other spirits are also used to make whisky, which gives the whisky additional flavors. The barrel in which Bourbon was previously matured conveys notes of vanilla, caramel and coconut. A Port barrel will give the whisky notes of dried fruits or chocolate, while the barrel in which Sherry was matured earlier hides aromas of nuts, almonds and spices. After a Port barrel will show us dried fruits, chocolate and spices, or after a sweet French wine - Sauternes - characteristic notes of honey, coconut and fruit peel. There are also situations in which whisky is matured in different barrels in turn.

Typology of whisky

Whisky is produced all over the world, but the most popular is Scotch, Irish or American whisky. Traditional Scotch whisky, as a rule, is distilled twice. The law dictates that the beverage must be distilled, matured for at least three years in oak barrels and then bottled necessarily in Scotland. Often, when choosing a whisky for a gift, we suggest the designation YO - Years Old. This symbol indicates the age of the youngest component of the whisky - so having a 12YO whisky we can assume that it also included older spirits. Types of Scotch whisky include Blended Scotch Whisky, Blended Malt Whisky, Grain Whisky and Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Irish whiskey is more fine than Scotch whiskey, and this is due to triple distillation. A distillate that is more refined and finer than Scotch whisky goes into barrels. Irish whiskey is distilled in alembics, although distillation columns are also used for this purpose. The beverage, must also be produced in Ireland and is mandated to be matured in a barrel for a minimum of 3 years. The main types of Irish whiskey include Single Malt Whiskey, Single Grain Whiskey, Pot Still Whiskey, Blended Whiskey and also Poteen. The last type is the term for Irish whiskey smoked illegally. One of the more popular Irish whiskey is Johnnie Walker. It is a type of blended whiskey, meaning that it is made from Single Malt Wh isky and Single Grain Whisky. You can find different varieties of Johnnie Walker whiskey on the market, including Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Johnnie Walker Gold Label, Johnnie Walker Green Label, Johnnie Walker Black Label and Johnnie Walker Red Label. The latter variety is perhaps the most popular whiskey from Johnnie Walker.

American whiskey is divided by the type of grain used in production. Bourbon Whiskey - 51% corn, Tennessee Whiskey - a unique Bourbon-type whiskey, but it uses special maple charcoal filters to give unique aromas and flavors, Corn Whiskey - 80% corn, Rye Whiskey - 51% rye, Rye Malt Whiskey - 51% malted rye, Wheat Whiskey - 51% wheat. Whiskey must not be distilled to an alcohol value of more than 80%, while bottling into barrels takes place at an alcohol content of less than 62.5%. Coloring and flavoring is prohibited. Only water is added to the distillate. When choosing Scotch, Irish or American whiskey for a gift, we can be sure that it will be of the highest quality.

Pairing whiskey with food

Tasting whiskey is determining its color, aromas and flavors. It is tasting whisky served straight from the bottle and after adding odbirony water to reveal its hidden qualities. To discover the best of whisky, tasting in small tulip-shaped glasses is encouraged. The serving temperature of this drink depends on our personal preferences. Whisky is also an excellent companion for meals. As an aperitif, we recommend lighter, fresher, grassy and fruity whiskeys. At mealtime - medium whiskies for wild fowl, pates, smoked fish or mushroom dishes, while heavy whiskies for grilled meat, steaks and desserts.

Whisky prices

On store shelves we can find various types of whisky in different price ranges, starting from 30 zlotys to 50 zlotys, then reaching for the popular 50-100 zlotys segment, with higher quality exceeding the 100 zlotys ceiling, to spend even more than 200 z lotys for the best. Many drinks at discount prices can also be found in outlet stores. When embarking on your whisky adventure, it's worth starting with the lower-priced spirits and, with time and experience, raising your price bar, tasting whisky from higher and higher price shelves.
