Whether a wine falls into the category of dry red wines, semi-dry wines or sweet wines is determined by the level of sweetness, that is, the residual sugar content.

Whether a wine falls into the category of dry red wines, semi-dry wines or sweet wines is determined by the level of sweetness, that is, the residual sugar content. The level of sweetness in semi-dry red wines is moderate at 10-21 kcal., 17-35 g/l RS. Comparing this, for example, to heavily dry wines, which have 0 kcal. and less than 1 g/l RS, or sweet wines, which are in the range of 72-130 kcal, 120-220 g/lRS, it is considered that semi-dry red wines are the golden mean, with average values of basic wine characteristics, i.e. structure, sweetness, tannin content, alcohol and acidity.

Red semi-dry wines perfectly combine the refreshment of dry wines and the appeal of semi-sweet wines, so they will successfully unite supporters of dry and sweet wines at the same table. Semi-dry red wines appeal to those who seek in wine the aromas typical of red wines, i.e. the flavors of red and black fruits, spices, herbs, flowers, barrel aromas or chocolate, and additionally care for a delicate sweetness in the mouth. General standards are set, which, due to the sugar content, determine whether wines can be classified as semi-dry. In contrast, there are sometimes exceptions related to acidity. The rule of thumb is that the difference between the acidity of the wine and the residual sugar content is not less than 10 g. For example, a red wine with an acidity of 9 g, which contains 19 g of sugar, can be classified as a semi-dry red wine, even though the sweetness goes beyond the general framework for its taste. In this category, the proportion of quality wines is lower than in dry wines.
