Solaris - the king of Polish vineyards

Solaris is a grape strain that was created in 1975, as a hybrid of merzling and a seedling from the Institute of Viticulture in Geisenheim, Germany. Hybrids such as solaris are created to create a grape strain that is resistant to frost or fungal diseases, to cope with slightly colder climates. Solaris is now grown even in Sweden or Norway, but has established itself very well in Poland. Polish winemakers have taken a liking to this variety for its fertility and resilience, creating excellent, aromatic wines from this strain. Today it is the most widely planted white variety in Polish vineyards.

What kind of wine is solaris?

Solaris is very malleable, so wines from this variety can also be very different - fully dry, semi-dry or fabulously sweet. Solaris wine has a lot of natural sugars in it, making it very oily in the glass and characterized by notes of nectarines, candied fruits and ripe peaches.

The success of Poland's Turnau Vineyard, now the largest Polish winery with a huge acreage of this grape, comes as no surprise. Turnau Vineyard Solaris is now the flagship and iconic Polish wine, which tastes different in every vintage, but always just as delicious. The Solaris wine from Turnau Winery can safely be considered one of the wines that introduces the wine lover to the style and taste of Polish wines. In the mouth it brings to mind mirabelle and sweet grapefruit. But don't forget that the Turnau Vineyard from solaris also produces a divine Noble Harvest, made from grapes affected by noble mold.

Solaris wine from Turnau Win ery is very fleshy and juicy, but if you are looking for solaris wine in a more dry, mineral version, you should look for it among wines from cooler regions of Poland. Such an example is the Zamojska Winery Solaris, which has more cool, crisp and citrusy stories.

Solaris provides delicious single-varietal wines, but is very fond of blending with other varietals. An example of such a wine is the Vineyard Silesian Cuvee - a semi-dry, highly perfumed wine, fragrant with lilacs and currant leaves, where solaris pairs well with other hybrid varietals popular in Poland - hibernal, bianca, seyval blanc, johanitter and jutrzen.

Where to buy solaris wine?

Polish quality solaris wine, despite the fact that more and more of it is being produced every year, is available mainly in specialized wine stores. The production of solaris wine is still so small that it's hard to look for Polish wines in popular discount stores, although several producers have already tried their hand. The largest number of Polish solaris wines is currently available from Turnau Winery. When searching for solaris, there is a good chance that you will come across Stanislaw Lem's most popular novel, namely Solaris. And it can be said that the ocean Solaris from Lem's classic and solaris wine have a common denominator - solaris takes different forms, according to what kind of wine we want to make from it.
