Etymology and origins of Nero d'AvolaNero

d'Avola is a variety name meaning exactly "black grape from Avola." The first mention of this variety dates back to 1696 , when a certain Francesco Cupani classified the grape under the name "Calabrese". This word, when divided in half, will reveal two members, which we will be able to translate after reaching for words still used in ancient times in Sicily. "Calea" means "grape" and "aulisi" means, of course, "of Avola." Thus, both names of the graft mean exactly the same thing, but refer to the language of other times.

Over the course of history, Nero d'Avola has become popular, and this has led to the sale of many lower-quality, mass-market-oriented wines. Hence, in 2016, a consortium of Sicilian winemakers decided to label the varietal only with a DOC or DOCG appellation, with no possibility of selling table or regional wine with the Nero d'Avola label

.Characteristics of the varietalNero

d'Avola is a prolific varietal sensitive, however, to excessive droughts, which are not unusual in a hot region like Sicily. Therefore, in order to keep the vineyards from drying out and dying, additional irrigation is sometimes used. The grapes themselves are characterized by their dark and thick skins, which used to ripen in early September.

Wines from the Nero d'Avola variety have a rich bouquet full of dark and red fruits, often with accents of spices, herbs, chocolate, dried fruits, as well as barrel notes of vanilla and wood. All of this depends naturally on the location of the vines and the later selected vinification methods. The structure of wines from this varietal is known for its full and expressive body with a sizable amount of tannins. On the palette, the acidity of this grape, although sometimes pronounced, is usually hidden behind dense and sweet accents coming from cultivation in hot climates. In such a grape used to give the effect of residual sugar resulting in quite a sizable amount of alcohol - this varies in wines around 13.5-14.5%.

Nero d'Avola is also used in the production of Marsala. This fortified wine comes in both dry and sweet styles under the DOC controlled origin appellation. Much of Marsala is produced using white varietals such as Grillo, Inzolia and Cataratto, nevertheless in the Rubino version the protagonists are red varietals - Perricone, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d'Avola in their own form. The character of these wines is ideal for accompanying a board of aged and moldy cheeses, as well as a perfect match

d'Avola as a strain with a dense and expressive structure full of tannins and acidity loves structured dishes based on meat - especially red meat. Steaks, burgers, beef stew, chili con carne and any dish going in a similar vein will be the perfect complement to a glass of wine created from this varietal. Bottles with a softer interpretation of this varietal will also be a great companion to a cheese and charcuterie board, pizza, pasta, or pasta-based dishes
