in Puglia is arguably the source of the best Negroamaro wines, especially those produced under the Salice Salentino DOC label. The warm Mediterranean-style climate is good for this grape variety, allowing it to reach optimal levels of ripeness. In addition to the aforementioned Salento, the grape is also grown in the Tarento, Lecce, Brindisi and Foggia areas.

There are two schools of explanation as to where the name of this grape originated. The modern translation from Italian refers to "negro - black" and "amaro - bitter," which together refer to the variety's dark color and spicy flavors. However, the hot southern reaches of Italy are known for producing ripe red wines with high sugar levels, so the term "bitter" should not be taken too literally. The other school uses the Latin-Greek interpretation and says it means "dark black," referring only to the intense color of the Negroamaro grape. The name Negro Amaro is also used, very close to the words "niuru maru," which means "black bitter" in the local dialect.

It is believed that a variety of this strain came to Puglia from Greece, possibly via present-day Albania. Today, the strain is also grown in California and Australia, but on a much smaller scale

its aromatics, Negroamaro creates complex wines, characterized by a beautiful, deep and ruby red color. The grape gives the wine an earthiness and aromas of dark fruits - mainly dried and ripe plums, blackberries and cherries. On the finish one finds a delicate herbal touch reminiscent of flavors of thyme, allspice, cloves or cinnamon. On the palate it is quite dry thanks to perceptible tannins.

It is also worth mentioning that the Negramaro grape is widely used for the production of rose wines with a delicate coral-pink color, where we will feel the scent of rose, strawberry and cherry combined with the sweet but dry taste of the wine.

is a solid choice, no matter what you put on the table. It pairs perfectly with traditional Salento dishes, such as homemade pasta or meatballs in tomato sauce with lamb meat. Fruity and full-bodied wines from the Negroamaro varietal are also a great companion to many grilled dishes, spicy meats, or braised meats. They can handle the strongly intense flavors of the dishes served, which doesn't mean they won't be a great complement to fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
