All appellations today number more than 400, with about half of the higher-end wines falling into the country's three major wine regions. The lower tier is made up of regional wines (Indicazione di Geografica Tipica/ Indigazione di Geografica Protetta), presenting, however, an immeasurably different level, up to and including the country's most famous wines. Table wines bear the designation Vino da tavola. An important feature of Italian winemaking is the use of the greatest number of varieties in commercial production. In Italy, look out for three terms appearing on labels: classico - denoting the most historic section in a few selected Italian appellations, superiore - denoting wines of enhanced quality relative to a generic appellation in the same area, and riserva - wines requiring higher quality and a minimum specified maturation time before leaving the winery. Vegan wines are marked with a green leaf.

Wine regions of ItalyPiedmont

- is located in the northwest of the country and is considered Italy's most important wine region. The main reason for this is not purely historical, but mainly the most important wine of the region. Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, called the "king and queen of Italian wines." Piedmont has the highest number of DOCG-grade wines in the entire country. The region produces mainly red wines accounting for about 90% of production; white wines are also produced, but in smaller quantities. The most important variety in this region is Nebbiolo, followed by Barbera, Dolcetto, Ruche from red varieties and from white varieties Moscato, Arneis. It is worth remembering that world varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown in this region.

Veneto - is located in the north-east of ItalyVeneto is one of the three most important wine regions of the country, due to the class of wines and history of the region and the amount of wines produced. The icon of the region is Amarone DOCG, and the most recognized is Valpolicella DOC. Veneto also produces DOC Recioto , Ripasso, Superiore and Classico wines. Amarone and Recioto are dry and sweet wines that are produced by the method of drying the grapes otherwise known as "appassimento." Another star of the region are the wines of several appellations of Prosecco, a sparkling wine produced by the classic method. Veneto is also famous for its light red wines from Bardolino DOC made on the shores of Lake Garda. The most important red local varieties are Corvina, Corvinone, Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara, while the white varieties are Garganego, Trebbiano di Soave, Pinot Grigio and Glera. French varietals are also grown: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, Chardonney and Sauvignon Blanc.

Tuscany - this Italian region stretches across the western side of central Italy, is certainly the most popular Italian region, not only among wine lovers
.
It is the third most important region in Italy. Here we can find Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, commonly referred to as the "viceroy of Italian wines," and the most popular red Italian wines in the world, coming from a single appellation within Chianti DOCG. Other appellations include Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Carmignano DOCG of the red wines, and Vernaccia di San Gimignano among the whites. The next most important and well-known are the so-called Supertoscans. Supertoscans are usually classified as regional wines in addition to Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. The predominant red local varietal is Sangiovese, found under various local names, which in quality wines is most often complemented by local varieties of Canaiolo, Mammolo, Colorino and Malvasia Nera, as well as permitted international varieties, most often Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Among the local white varietals are Vernaccia and Vermentino, Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia. Trebbiano is the staple for another local specialty: the long-ripened, often incredibly sweet Vin Santo, made in various appellations in Tuscany.
The
region also grows Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir.

Abruzzo - a region in the west of central Italy famous for its two appellations Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC for red wines and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo for whites. Wines in this region, due to the cooler climate and heavier soils, are decidedly more refreshing and slender. The region's most important varieties are Montepulciano and Trebbiano for reds, and the white variety Pecorino, which yields rounded and mineral wines.
The
most important international varieties in the region are Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Puglia
- located in the south-east of Italy, Puglia is primarily famous for its Primitivo di Manduria DOC, Primitivo Salento DOC, Salice Salentino DOC and Copertino DOC appellations. The emblematic variety here is primitivo however, Negroamaro, Nero di Troia and Malvasia Nera play a slightly smaller role. White wines in much smaller quantities mainly from the Trebbiano and Chardonney varietals. You can also use the Zinfandel variety which is related to Primitivo.
The
sweet Moscato di Trani DOC wine is also a local specialty.

Sicily - An Italian island surrounded by the sea, located south of the mainland, often referred to as the "reservoir of Italy." It's not just the amount of Italian wines produced, but the variety of varieties used, both well-known and from other Italian regions, as well as internationally. Sicily is known primarily for its rich, well-structured regional Italian wines, especially single-vineyard wines. The main appellations are Etna DOC and Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. Specialties include the sweet wines Passito di Panteleria DOC made from the Mocato variety, and one of the world's oldest wines, the fortified wine Marsala DOC. The most important white varieties are Grillo, Inzolia, Cataratto and Grecanico and the red varieties are Nero d'Avola, Pericone, nerello Mascalese, nerello Cappuccio and Frapato. Of the international varieties, Muscat - known locally as Zibibbo, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot.

Sardinia
- which lies to the west of the central part of the country - is a distinctly separate part of Italian winemaking because of the style of its Italian wines. The region's best-known appellations are Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, Vermentino di Gallura DOCG and Vermentino di Sardegna DOC. Most of the appellations found here are for varieties grown on the island. The icon of Sardinia is Cannonau, also known as Garnacha (Grenache) in Spain and France. The other face of Sardinia is the Vermentino variety, which reaches the apogee of its profile on the island Among other varieties grown in the region, Cangnulari, Monica and Nuragus de Sulcius should certainly be mentioned, and of white wines the Torbato variety. A local curiosity is the fortified wine Vernaccia di Oristano DOC, practically unheard of outside the local restaurants and oenoteca.

Italian Wines Types and NamesItalian wines

are very popular among our users. A light red wine called Messer del Fauno, or the pleasantly sparkling Ponte Prosecco, are particularly praised. Conte di Campiano Appasimento and Primitivo are also in great demand on our site. Truly good Italian wines come from the vineyards of well-known families such as Antinori, La Spinetta, Gaja, Masi, Isole e Olena.
