Tokaj - the true essence of wine

Thehistory of Tokaj wine goes back as far as the fifteenth century, Tokaj was called "the king of wines and the wine of kings." Tokaj is also one of the oldest wine regions defined by borders and one of the first where strict rules for wine production were introduced.

What is tokaj made of?

Tokajis produced in Hungary and a small area of Slovakia in the Tokaj region. Tokaj wine is based mainly on the furmint grape, but varietals such as harslevel and sarga muskotaly (yellow muscat) are also used. Tokaj is made from grapes that are either dried or affected by the noble mold - botrytis cinerea.

Is tokaj dry?

Tokaj can be found in basically any type of sweetness - from dry tokaj furmint, often semi-sweet tokaj szamorodni and intensely sweet tokaj aszu or eszencia, which must contain a minimum of 450 grams of residual sugar! Tokaj aszu wine very often includes the number of puttons on the label - what exactly is it about? Puttons are the so-called baskets of grapes affected by noble mold - the more of them there are, the more essential and dense the tokaj aszu wine is.

What does tokaj taste like?

We all know that sweet tokaj has notes of propolis, honey, nuts or marzipan. But what is tokaj like in the dry version? It turns out that furmint tokaj has claw. You can smell ripe fruits such as quince or apricot, but dry tokaj has a characteristic high and sharp acidity. Dry tokaj is therefore expressive and decisive. A perfect example of this is Oremus Tokaji Furmint Mandolas, a very elegant and classic tokaj furmint. And how to serve tokaj furmint? Necessarily with equally expressive and spicy food, such as spicy cured meats or hot stews. It's sweet, but very velvety in the mouth, full of notes of milk candy, honey and lime.
