It reaches its full potential especially under the tutelage of Burgundian masters and local terroir, but it has also been perfectly accepted in the US, Germany, New Zealand or Chile. Its history can be traced back two thousand years, when it began the long road to becoming the shining star of French winemaking.

Characteristics of the strain

The color of grape juice from the Pinot Noir strain is considered one of the brightest on the wine palette. The resulting wine has a light structure with low tannins and marked acidity. Pinot Nero captivates with a bouquet of aromas of red fruits such as cranberry and cherry, and is often accompanied by notes of vanilla, licorice, mushrooms or tobacco. The best representatives of the varietal can surprise with incredible depth and complexity of flavor, leaving a balsamic sensation on the taste buds for a long time.

In France, Pinot Noir is famous above all thanks to two regions. The first is Burgundy, where the best wines from the pinot noir grape are made. They are characterized by earthy aromas accompanied by mushrooms, wet leaves, roses and cherries. The second French region known for producing wines from the Pinot Noir grape is Champagne. From Champagne come prestigious sparkling wines produced by the traditional method of the Champagne appellation - champagnes. In addition to the production of wines from the Pinot Noir grape, Champagne is dominated by the other two varieties, i.e. Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, because in a blend with Pinot Noir they create excellent Champagnes. The Pinot Meunier grape is a red wine variety, which is called the brother of the Pinot Nero grape, this variety is increasingly appreciated by producers precisely thanks to the world-famous Champagne wines. Pinot Meunier grapes are small, cylindrical-conical and condensed. The berries, on the other hand, are small, round, dark blue and juicy. Often in Champagne you'll hear the name Meunier interchangeably with Pinot Meunie, Pinot Meunier blended with other grapes helps soften the wine. On its own, it has many similar flavors and aromas to its sibling Pinot Noir. Pinot Meunier imparts aromatic and fruity flavors and color to the wine. Champagnes with a significant Pinot Meunier content usually do not have as much aging potential as champagnes that consist mainly of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Therefore, it is most often used for champagnes that are intended to be consumed young.

Pinot Noir wines also do well in the wine regions of the New World, especially California, Oregon, New Zealand or Chile. Compared to their European representatives, the wines there are more strongly structured, slightly denser, with less earthy and more fruity character. They are dominated by raspberries, cherries, often with a hint of vanilla coming from the oak barrel.

Pinot Noir also ties in with South Africa's winemaking history. The famous varietal that reigns supreme among South African wines is Pinotage, and it is one that is a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault (Hermitage) varietal, which was bred in 1925 by Abraham Perold of Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Wines from the Pinotage varietal are characterized by their dark color, which is due to grapes of intense color, and have a spicy bouquet combined with berry notes in the taste.

Foods to accompany Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir in the context of pairing with food is unique in its own way, as it combines lightness with incredible richness. This makes the wine light enough not to overshadow a fish-based dish with its structure, yet complex enough to perfectly complement a plate of aromatically rich meat. In this way, we can achieve a consensus by choosing a bottle for a meeting where the expected selection of dishes will be characterized by diversity.

A classic of foodpairing with Pinot Noir is duck, specifically udo confit. The wine's acidity balances wonderfully with the fat and flavors contained in the meat, creating a perfect juxtaposition. The pairing with chicken in butter sauce is equally fascinating.

The earthiness and aromas of mushrooms will be an invaluable companion when pairing wine with mushroom risotto, full of flavor and creaminess.

In addition, it is worth remembering the classic cheese board, on which, if Pinot Noir is present, goat cheese must not be missing. Following the principle of pairing local products, it is worth trying Comte cheese, which comes precisely from the Burgundy area.

History and quality at the price of Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most important varietals in the wine world. Its history speaks for it, but also the extraordinary quality that comes from the terroir and the passion of the winemakers who undertake the art of vinification of this grape. The attractive price of Pinot Noir offered by many of them makes it worth a closer look at the result of this work and the unique character of the resulting wines.
