What is madeira wine?

Madeira wine is a fortified wine, that is, a wine to which alcohol, usually brandy, is added during production. The uniqueness of this wine lies in its maturation process - it is subjected to controlled oxidation and "cooking". These wines are placed in barrels that are stored in warm rooms or special ovens, which simulates the maritime conditions in which wine used to travel to distant corners of the world. This process, called "estufag", gives madeira wine its depth, richness of flavor and distinctive caramel notes.

Madeira comes in a variety of styles, from very sweet to dry. It all depends on the grape varietals used, the most popular of which are Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malvasia. Each is responsible for a different degree of sweetness in the wine, which means that madeira can satisfy a variety of tastes.

How much does madeira wine cost?

The price of a madeira wine depends on several factors, including its age, style and producer. These wines can be quite affordable, starting at around $70 for younger vintages that have been matured in barrels for a short time. On the other hand, older bottles, especially those from higher quality categories, can cost up to several hundred zlotys. The most expensive madeirs, which have matured for several decades, can reach prices of several thousand zlotys.

It is also worth paying attention to special editions of madeira wines, which can be more expensive due to limited availability or a unique production process. Investing in older bottles can prove to be worthwhile, as these wines have a long life span and gain even more depth of flavor with age.

What to drink madeira wine with?

Madeira is an extremely versatile wine that goes well with a variety of dishes. Dry varieties, such as Sercial, go perfectly with seafood dishes, especially oysters, shrimp or light salads. On the other hand, medium-sweet versions, such as Verdelho, pair well with poultry dishes, especially chicken or duck.

Sweet madeirs, especially Bual and Malvasia, are excellent choices for desserts. They go well with chocolate cakes, blue cheese and nutty baked goods. Interestingly, madeira can also be an excellent tasting wine, ideal for drinking on its own, unaccompanied by food, thanks to its complex aromas and long finish.

Is madeira a sherry or a wine?

Madeira is often compared to its Spanish counterpart because of the similar production process - both wines are fortified. However, they are two completely different liquors, coming from different regions and produced in different ways. Sherry comes from Andalusia, Spain, while madeira - as the name suggests - comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Their maturation method also differs: while the Spanish classic is aged in cool cellars under the solera system, madeira is matured in the heat, which gives it a unique oxidized character.
