Why use several wine strains instead of one?

Different types of grapes are mixed together to obtain a product with the desired characteristics and taste. By doing so, the winemaker can achieve specific wine characteristics. For example, something to emphasize or improve the color, soften the tannins or add sweetness. However, this does not mean that only multi-varietal wines are drinkable. Such a combination of several varietals primarily gives a picture of what can be extracted from a wine. Experimenting with blending is a field to be explored, and one of the most important skills in a winemaker's job.

Different wine varieties are also mixed together because of the climate. The capricious weather that can be in Europe sometimes forces winemakers to blend. By adding even a small amount of a different grape variety to the base ingredient, it is possible to maintain the same taste and aroma of the wine from year to year. Despite appearances, this is not an easy task. Blending multiple wine varietals can help in such situations. As a counterbalance, single-varietal wines often rule in the New World. In countries like Chile and Australia, the climate is so stable that vintages of wines come out the same or similar in taste

.How is a multi-strain wine made?

Blending two grape varieties together does not involve fermenting them together. First, mostly single-vineyard wines are created and also separately matured. Mixing of different wines, as a rule, takes place at the end of the production process. Sometimes, before bottling, winemakers still decide to mature such a multi-strain wine together

.Strains can be mixed with each other if they are the same colorThis

is one of the most common myths about multi-strain wines. Red varieties can be blended with white varieties. And this is not a recipe for rosé wine. At Vinesia.co.uk we have many examples of blending two colors of wine varietals. The most famous is champagne, for example, Lallier Brut Nature made from white Chardonnay and red Pinot Noir. And this wine is white. On the other hand, among the quiet wines, we have the dry red Baron De Ley Siete Vinas Reserva Rioja. The wine is built from as many as seven varietals, three of which are white and four of which are red

.We often reach for multi-strain winesSome wines

can be known, liked, often reached for and yet not know that they are a coupage. Among such popular multi-strain wines is Porto. For its production, the most commonly used are: Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. A very popular multi-strain wine is the aforementioned champagne. Approved for its production are: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, although it is not mandatory to use all of them. We also have Chateauneuf du Pape, which is mainly made from: Grenache, Syrah and Mourverde. However, as many as thirteen varietals can be used in its production! Chianti also tends to be a multi-strain wine. To Sangiovese is added, for example: Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc. Sparkling Cava wine from Spain can be single-varietal, but this is quite a rare purchase. Most often it is a blend of three varietals: Macabeo, Parellada, Xarello.
