. The

aroma is filled with notes of figs, berries, blackberries.

Where does Primitivo come from

? The origin of the Primitivo strain is still the subject of much debate. Without a doubt, its home today is southern Italy, while it is most likely that the strain was brought to the area from Croatian vineyards and known in those areas as Crljenak Kasteljanski. Less formal rumors report that the pedigree of Primitivo wine goes all the way back to the ancient Phoenicians, and that wine from the Primitivo variety was served at the Last Supper (!). In the 19th century, the Primitivo variety was introduced to the United States, where it is known as Zinfandel. The name primitivo strain comes from the Latin word "primativus" and means "early-ripening" - in Italy, Primitivo fruit ripens early and is one of the first to be harvested. In the 1990s' Primitivo wine was threatened with extinction - EU directives ordered the withdrawal of the strain and crops were subject to eradication due to difficulties in cultivation. Fortunately, in regions suitable for Primitivo wine, e.g. Puglia, the strain survived and is preserved until now in exceptional, very old and valuable vineyards.

Primitivo grape varieties (early maturing), giving low yields, are very sensitive to temperature changes, frost, drought and moisture. It is extremely important to properly time the Primitivo harvest for wine, as the fruit tends to over-ripen quickly, thus losing its unique fruity freshness. Ripening in sunny areas guarantees high sugar levels, which is a huge advantage. Early ripening means that the resulting wines are full, juicy, rich, fruity. Primitivo wines are very often stored in barrels in order to mature and acquire the characteristic oak notes of vanilla and sweet smoothness. Opening a bottle of Primitivo wine, one immediately feels the abundance of fruitiness, warmth and sunshine of the area in which the fruit has ripened. Is the price of Primitivo high? Primitivo wines cost from tens to hundreds of zlotys, and this depends on the region where the wine comes from, the barrel aging and maturation time in the barrels, the production methods, the producer and the vintage. It is relatively inexpensive due to its lower popularity than other Italian varietals, while their incredibly high quality repeatedly surprises! Fans of American Zinfandel will find their favorite aromas and flavors in Italian Primitivo, since these strains are the same grape variety
