Carmenere will go well with a variety of meats, especially those richly seasoned with herbs. It will also match perfectly with vegetables - mushrooms, tomatoes, green peppers or eggplant

.Carmenere from ChileIn

Chile, a single-varietal wine can contain up to 15% of other grape varieties blended with it. Winemakers specializing in Carmenere have found that a small percentage of Syrah or Petit Verdot makes for a more hearty wine with more "body"!

That today's best-known Carmenere comes specifically from Chile is obvious, but this knowledge was once the cause of much confusion. Chile, like other new-world countries, tried to build itself "its" wine variety. They opted for Merlot, which in Chile's characteristically harsh climate was taking on recognizable characteristics relative to the Old See. Meanwhile, when Merlot cuttings arrived in Chile in the early 19th century, Carmenere cuttings were among them. And so many Chilean winemakers, who had proudly cultivated their Chilean Merlots for generations, learned in the late 20th century that most likely most of them were Carmenere wines.

Today, it is estimated that about two-thirds of Chile's Merlot crop is actually Carmenere, which thus earns Chile the third largest crop - after Cabernet Sauvignon and Pais. Therefore, if we are looking for good Carmenere let's look for Chilean wines, and vice versa, if we are looking for good Chilean wines let's reach for Carmenere - especially those from the Colchagua region or the Los Lingues or Apalta subregion. Other regions of Chile specific to Carmenere are Rapel Valley and Maipo

.C

ultivation of the Carmenere varietalOn the shelves of our stores, Carmenere from Italy (Veneto - appellations of Arcole, Bagnoli di Sopra, Corti Benedettine del Padovano, Merlara, Monti Lessini, Riviera del Brento and Vicenza), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Collio Goriziano) can also be quite popular.

Although in the late 18th and early 19th centuries Carmenere was very intensively cultivated in France today it is almost non-existent here. The powerful pestilence (mildew and phylloxera) that afflicted the vineyards in the early 19th eradicated the strain from France
