Origin of the Xarello strainThe first

mention of the Xarello strain comes from the Catalan city of Barcelona, in 1785. Catalonia is home to more than 90% of the variety's plantings, and the region itself is considered its place of origin. DNA tests conducted have shown affinity with another famous grape of Spain, Macabeo, also found under the name Viura in the Rioja region, known primarily for its long-lived red wines. By way of mutation, the Xarello rosado strain was also created, which owes its name to the pink skin of the fruit

.Characteristics of the Xarello strainXarello

is a later-ripening grape with light skin and medium-sized berries. It is not one of the varieties capricious in terms of terroir and does not cause too many problems for winemakers. The vines enjoy resistance to pathogens due to the significant level of resveratrol in the skin of the fruit. It's a varietal with solid structure and expressive acidity, in the glass offering wines with an intense citrus bouquet with a hint of peach.

In mono-vineyard wine offerings from this varietal, you get a refreshing and fruity character, highlighted by crisp acidity and a round texture. One of the places boasting exquisite interpretations of this varietal is the area around the town of Alella, near Barcelona.

Xarello owes its popularity to being part of the coupage in the well-liked and highly regarded sparkling wine, Cava. Together with the Macabeo and Parellada varietals, it forms the core, in which it is responsible for conquering the structure and enlivening the wine with its expressive acidity. Thus, we can credit it with playing a key role in the aging potential of good bottles of Cava.

Cava is produced using a traditional method, known at least from the process of making Champagnes. Thanks to a second fermentation in the bottle and maturation on the lees, sparkling wines created in this way and with the participation of the Xarello varietal are characterized by a creamier, rounder structure, extraordinary elegance and harmony of flavors. In addition to notes of orchard fruit and citrus, there are toasty notes that add a touch of chic and seriousness in the glass. Although most bottles of Cava are made in Catalonia, the appellation is not solely attributed to this region, so it can also be created in other places in Spain

.Xarello wine for a mealThanks

to its expressiveness, Xarello is an excellent basis for wines served with a meal. The perfect partner for a glass of wine in this case will be light salads, seafood, fried dishes, as well as snack boards - especially aged hard cheeses.

If you choose Cava, the choice becomes even more interesting - it will be ideal again for a cheese board, but also for dishes based on white meat in creamy sauces, risotto or even Asian cuisine.
