Characteristics of the Syrah strain

Wines from the Syrah strain are characterized by an intense red color, high density and rich aroma. There is a pronounced acidity and a juicy and spicy taste. Certainly, Syrah wines can be classified as heavy and strongly fruity. The taste is dominated by accents of cherry, black currant, forest fruits and violets. The longer the wine matures, the easier it becomes to detect aromas of dark chocolate, pepper, smoke and leather. The spicy flavor of Syrah wine depends largely on the origin of the vine. Syrah wines are juicy, herbal, acidic, with a strong backbone and a peppery finish. Shiraz wine, on the other hand, is more alcoholic, with accents of ripe plum and cherry fruit and chocolate.

Cultivation

The grapes have a thick skin and like sunny places. However, strong sun and drought should be avoided. Then they lose their character, i.e. intense acidity and aroma. The strain is resistant to many diseases and does not have high soil requirements. The fruit takes a long time to ripen, but the variety is highly productive and has large clusters. Systematic pruning and stemming is also required. The best product for vinification is the fruit just before maturity, as this is when it contains the most sugar. It is also worth mentioning that the Syrah grape and strain is among the top ten most widely grown grape varieties. The best production is seen in the Mediterranean basin, and the most is grown in the Rhone Valley. Wines from the Syrah strain are also found in Italy, South Africa and California. The new wind is represented by Australia, where it has taken the name Shiraz.

Syrah wines from Europe

Syrahwine originated in the northern part of the Rhone Valley, but it is grown all over the world. Compared to warmer areas of Australia, New Zealand, California and South Africa, the region has a temperate climate. It yields wines similar to most popular wines grown in cool climates. Although when good, the wines are denser and fruitier than most wines from south of the Rhone Valley, they are distinguished by finesse, elegance, a precisely defined profile and pronounced tannins. Syrah wines from Hermitage have a darker gown, are denser, contain more extract, and have a more pronounced aroma of black currants when mature. The wines are also characterized by a muscular, tannic structure. Syrah from Cote-Rotie is lighter in color and more delicate and smoky in aroma. It is characterized by less rich fruit aromas, although it has a more artful aroma. On the palate, it is softer and less tannic. The Syrah grape lends quality and core to Grenache-based spirits from the northern Rhone Valley. It is combined in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon in Provence, and with Grenache and Mourvedre varieties in Coteaux du Languedoc and Cotes de Roussillion. Italian Syrah wines come mainly from Tuscany: they are sprightly wines with peppery notes, a bit rough, but not lacking in refinement.

Syrah and Shiraz wine from New Vistula

Australia produces Shiraz wine of immeasurably different styles, but the most typical wines with the Shiraz name originate in South Australia. The character of this wine differs from wines produced in the Rhone Valley. It has a bouquet of ripe blackberries, cherries, vanilla with a tinge of oak and licorice. On the palate it is warming, sweet like chocolate and infused with fruit. That's how wines from Mc Laren Valle tend to be.

In addition to these few true stars, lighter liquors are produced among the dry Syrah wines. The Barossa produces similar Syrah wines, and the best of them combine density and richness with elegance. Coonawarra is a cooler region, and Syrah wines there are distinguished by more pronounced notes of mint and a hint of pepper, and more restraint. True Syrah wines from cool climates come from the state of Victoria, resembling in style Syrah wines from the Rhone Valley. They are sprightly with pronounced, pungent notes of pepper and mint.

California plantations are small. They yield Syrah wines of varying styles, and the best of them exhibit similar grace and elegance to Syrah wines from the northern Rhone Valley. Also yields wines with fuller flavor and less tannin, though they lack the power and density inherent in wines from southern Austaralia. They succeed best in slightly warmer regions. In Washington State, Syrah wine is produced on a very small scale, but its qualities are at a very high level. Dry, ripe, juicy Syrah wines of medium body with a distinct, calm peppery note are produced here.

Chilean winemakers are experimenting with Syrah but more successful are producers in Argentina, who create Syrah wines that are powerful, dark, juicy and velvety, often with nuances of green olives and ripe fruit jam.

When it comes to the price of Syrah wine, the range is wide. We can find excellent liquors in the range of 30 zloty - 50 zl oty, but it is worth remembering that quality in relation to price increases. The more expensive wines we choose, the more aromas and flavors we can expect during the tasting.

What to pair Syrah wines with

Heavy and barrel-aged wines will go well with dishes served on the basis of red meat and grilled dishes. A lighter and fruitier version is recommended to be served with lamb and duck. Syrah wine will also match well-seasoned vegetables, olives and aromatic cheeses.
