Characteristics of wineFor

climatic and geological reasons, New Zealand has all the predisposition to combine allure and elegance in wines. This is determined by such factors as the abundance of sunshine during the day and refreshing, quite cool nights, the movement of air masses, the large number of hills and valleys and the magnificent substrates.

The distinctive wine from New Zealand has a very intense fruit aroma and crisp acidity. A perfect companion for hot afternoons and evenings. And what does the local Sauvignon Blanc smell and taste like? Tropical fruits, gooseberry passion fruit, freshly cut grass, grapefruit, citrus and white currant.

Caps on wine bottles are a common thing, regardless of class. The distance New Zealand wines have to travel to reach the tables of other continents and the dangers lurking during transport necessitate modern closure technologies, allowing the wine to develop freely and giving it a chance to reach its destination in perfect condition

Grape varietiesThe

winemakers centered their work around the classics: Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and later also Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Today, both the country's wine map and crop statistics leave no doubt: Sauvignon Blanc has become the hegemon of the vineyards, Pinot Noir has grown into an iconic red, while Chardonnay, and especially the dark varieties from Bordeaux, have located themselves in small enclaves. On the map of New Zealand, new varieties have also entered with momentum: Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Syrah, completely different from the works of its neighbors across the sea, closer rather to the Rhône classics, is having its big time.

Wine regionsOn

the wine map of New Zealand, the most important names are:
  • Marlborough - the epicenter of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, with a very distinctive profile. It also produces excellent wines from Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay.
  • Martinborough - a region known primarily for the country's finest Pinot Noir, even deceptively similar in structure to the French classics. Also known for great Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as a range of other international varieties, including Malbec and Riesling.
  • Hawkes Bay - New Zealand's oldest and largest wine region. Once known primarily for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines. Today it is home to excellent Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Viogner.
