In vintages that have been very hot, you may see higher alcohol content and tannins. Barreling causes the wine to mellow and become more mature

.Name and origin of the varietalMonastrell

is a red grape variety, grown mainly in Spain and France to a lesser extent also in Australia, the USA and South Africa. It is a very old variety that originated in Spain, where it was most likely brought by the Phoenicians in 500 BC. In Spain, this strain used to be called mataro (the name of a locality that lies in the northeastern part of the country, in the region of Catalonia on the Mediterranean Sea), and today it is more commonly used monastrell (Spanish) or monestrell (Catalan language - a strain that was grown around monasteries). In Spain, the variety is found in Valencia, Jumilia, Yecla, Almanas and Alicante. In France, in the south in the Bandol appellation. There used to be a lot more of this strain grown before the phylloxera and powdery mildew epidemics arrived. Phylloxera is an aphid native to the North American continent that destroyed virtually most European vineyards in the second half of the 19th century, before reaching the rest of the continents

.ClimateThe

Monastrell grape is a variety that buds and ripens late, making it resistant to gray mold and bark necrosis. It does well in calcareous and clay-limestone soils. It needs a lot of sun, high temperatures up to +40*C and a warm climate preferably in a nearby sea location, which moderates the drop in nighttime temperatures. Harvest usually takes place in October

.Aromas in the strain:

Mourvedre (Monastrell) - this is a strain that usually gives wines with a very dark color, strong structure and considerable alcohol content. It does not always give wines with high acidity. Tannins usually of low level. Aromas that can be sensed are dark fruits of cherry, black currant, as well as spices and herbs. In vintages that have been very hot, higher alcohol and tannin content may appear. Barreling causes the wine to mellow and become more mature. The Monastrell grape is often blended (blended) with Syrah, Merlot or Cabernet Suvignon. The Monastrell grape is also used in the production of rosé wines and sparkling wines such as Cava

.Pairing Monastrell wine with foodThis wine

, by virtue of its strong structure, earthy character and spicy aromas, is a good companion to grilled red and white meat dishes, wild fowl such as roast duck, but when aged in barrel it pairs well with game.
