The variety was obtained in 1968 at the University of Freiburg. It is named after the then director of the Freiburg research center: Johanes Zimmermann. The Johanniter variety was thus named in his honor

.Characteristics of the Johanniter varietalThe Johanniter variety

produces balanced wines with good structure. Among the aromas of the wine are captivating citrus notes in the foreground and aromas of apples, apricots and grapefruit in the background. In the finish, the characteristic bitterness of this varietal is often felt. A round, yet airy structure with well-balanced acidity and minerality make Johanniter wines an excellent partner for a light dinner, as well as a casual gathering with friends.

The grape is reminiscent of Riesling, which is why, like this variety, it is suitable for longer barrel aging. The variety is planted in typically wine-growing countries, such as northern Italy. An interesting fact is that the variety also performs well in the warmer regions of the Polish climate (as already reported in records from the University of Freiburg). Polish producers are increasingly choosing to produce wines from this varietal. On Winezja.pl we proudly present Polish wines from the Johanniter variety, such as Winnica Dwórzno Johanniter Wine, Winnica Dwór Sanna Johanniter Wine, Winnica Solaris Mickiewicz Johanis Wine, Winnica Turnau Ice Baniewice Wine.Cultivation of the Johanniter

strainWhen

it comes to cultivation and ripening Johanniter is quite a graceful species. This variety has good resistance to frost and most diseases. It is also typified by fast and strong bush growth. Thus, it is not overly demanding in cultivation and gives hope for a successful harvest even after unexpected damage, such as hailstorms or frosts. It ripens faster than riesling, so it is a good alternative for places where riesling does not always find optimal varietals. In addition, its grapes are characterized by lower acidity than in riesling.
