In addition to Piedmont, Barbera is also grown in Lombardy, Emiglii-Romagna or Puglia, and in Sicily it even lived to see a different name - Perricone

.Characteristics of the strainHistorical

records indicate that the Barbera strain originated in the hills of Monferrato in Piedmont and is one of the oldest species in Italy. Over the centuries, cuttings have also been transplanted to the US, Argentina and Australia, where today you can also witness wines made from this grape. Nonetheless, the cradle of Barbera winemaking is still in Piedmont, where exquisite wine offerings from top appellations such as Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba come from. Barbera ripens earlier than another very popular Piedmontese varietal, Nebbiolo, nevertheless winemakers are experimenting with later harvests in order to concentrate more sugar in the fruit to balance the acidity contained in the later wine.

Barbera is a dark-colored wine with a fairly light texture. Dominant aromas include cherries, blackberries, dried herbs or licorice. In the mouth, juicy freshness is enriched by expressive acidity and very fine tannins. In wines where barrel has been used, the structure is deeper and more complex, and plums with a hint of spice become noticeable in the bouquet.

Due to its intense color, Barbera was once added in small amounts to Nebbiolo wines, in order to turn up the color of the hit wines from this varietal, which itself is relatively light.

Interestingly also, current DNA studies suggest that the Barbera strain is related to Mourvedre, grown in Spanish and French plots

.With which meals to pair Barbera wine?

Barbera is a wine that, due to its high acidity and clear character, is a very good choice for many types of dishes. Above all, it is a very good direction for Italian cuisine based on pasta and pizza with tomato sauce and meat accompaniments. In addition, it will do well with roast duck or pork.

The aromatic, but not too overpowering character of wines from the Barbera strain goes well with appetizers, for example, pesto with tomatoes and mozzarella or with a cheese board.

Wanting to choose the right fish, on the other hand, it is worth focusing on meatier species and reaching for cod fillet or toothfish. In this way, we will avoid overshadowing the meal with the unnecessary intensity of the wine in the glass

is a wine whose price and quality complement each other perfectly, as unusual, great bottles are found here at everyday, attractive prices. Its delicate structure and refreshing character, combined with its essential aroma and flavor, make this wine ideal for both a summer casual evening and an exquisite dinner. Thus, it can be said that it is a good choice for any occasion and there is something for everyone in a bottle of Barbera.
