It turns out that in the production of wine, zoonotic products are often used, which vegans consciously give up (zoonotic products are, for example, dairy and honey). Thus, although at first glance every wine seems vegan friendly, we may find small amounts of animal products in the finished bottle of wine.

Is every wine vegan?

Can vegans drink wine? Is every wine vegan? Wine is primarily made from grapes. However, in later processes, before the wine reaches the bottle, various substances are added to it, which may have the task of clarifying the liquor, for example. During the production process, sediment and suspension are produced on the liquid, which is the result of the fermentation process. In order for the wine to be clear and have a nice color, these must be eliminated. Such clarifying agents used in wine production include, for example, gelatin, chicken protein, casein, chitin from shellfish or fish glue. Although after filtration these substances are no longer contained in the wine and do not affect its taste or aroma, the very idea of using them is incompatible with veganism.

How are wines made for vegans?

Sometimes beeswax is used to coat the bottle neck. Fortunately, for those who do not want to consume wines clarified with gelatin or casein, vegan wines are being made. Winemakers around the world are meeting consumer expectations and replacing zoonotic substances with mineral substitutes. These include, for example, silica, bentonite, diatomite (diatomaceous earth) kaolin and various clays. They give the same effect, and are compatible with the vegan idea. Interestingly, vegan wines often come from Spain.

Let's summarize. What kind of wine is vegan? Only one in the production of which no animal products were used.

How to identify a vegan wine?

How to find a vegan wine? Wines for vegans, which do not contain any ingredients of animal origin and are 100% plant-based, are usually specially marked. You can find the markings on the label - the V stamp for vegans, in Poland it is often the mark of the Viva! Foundation. For ease of use, in the range of stores presented on the Vineyard website, we have marked all vegan wines with a green leaf symbol. Finally, some tips on how to buy vegan wines:
  • look for wines with a green leaf at Vinesia,
  • choose unfiltered wines (without the filtration process, there is no need for clarifying substances, and they are often vegan red wines),
  • don't forget that organic, biodynamic wines are not always suitable for vegans and vegetarians,
  • look for indications on labels - "V", "Vegan friendly".
And if you still have doubts, ask! Wineezja's vegan wine consultants will be happy to share their knowledge with you and advise you on what wine will be suitable for you.
