How to identify semi-sweet wine?

Wine labels can be enigmatic and hide a lot of valuable information under the names of appellations or local terms of wine style. The most common form of information on a label about the taste of semi-sweet wine is simply the term "semi-sweet," which can also occur in other languages - for example, semi dulce/ semi dolce/ meio doce.

The sweetness of a wine is determined by the amount of residual sugar in the wine that remains after the fermentation process. Traditional semi-sweet wines contain more than 15 grams of residual sugar per liter, although exact contents are determined by individual appellations and regions.

What are the characteristics of a red semi-sweet wine?

Above all, they are wines full of fruitiness with an aromatic bouquet and juicy flavor. Red semi-sweet wines harmonize the acidity and tannins they contain, making them easier to consume for a palate that prefers milder and sweeter flavors. The bouquet of flavors and precise characteristics depends on the grape variety used and the region of origin. In hot regions, grapes concentrate more sugars, resulting in a final wine with less acidity and more essential fruitiness.

What grape strains are used to make red semi-sweet wines?

Among the most common varietals used for semi-sweet wines are classic varieties for red wines, such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon grown in many parts of the world, as well as many other varieties famous especially in warmer regions. Exquisite semi-sweet wines come out of the hands of winemakers in Georgia, where, with the support of local varietals such as Saperavi, Rkatsiteli and Aleksandrouli, famous semi-sweet wines are created, both in the table-top version - the more everyday version, as well as special ones, such as Khvanchkhara.

Ideal occasions for red semi-sweet wine

Semi-sweetwines, by their delicate character full of fruitiness and subtle sweetness on the palate, are ideal for solo, casual tastings. Whether during an evening relaxation with a book or a movie, or in the company of friends - semi-sweet wines will introduce an element of pleasant and subtle sensations on the palate. On the other hand, even more sensations can be achieved by adding a board of long-ripened, moldy cheeses and a board of spicier cured meats. Reaching for the classic pairing of sweet and savory, delicate chocolate-based desserts are also delicious here.
