History of Chianti

The history of wine is as long and colorful as the region itself from which it comes. The origins of viticulture in Tuscany can be dated to Roman times, but it was not until the Middle Ages that the vineyards of the Chianti region began to resemble those we know today. In 1716, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici, issued an edict that defined the boundaries of the Chianti region and established standards for wine production. This was the first step toward a formal classification of Chianti wine.

Over the following centuries, Chianti evolved and improved through the efforts of local producers. In 1924 it received the official DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) designation, and in 1984 it became DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), the highest level of wine classification in Italy. This means that Chianti wine production is tightly regulated and subject to strict quality standards.

Is Chianti a good wine?

Chianti is a red wine that is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape variety. This is an Italian grape variety that is the main ingredient in many outstanding Tuscan wines. However, Chianti may also contain small amounts of other varieties, depending on the producer's specifications.

Chianti is known for its rich aroma and distinctive flavor. The wine often has an intensely fruity bouquet, with notes of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, as well as delicate spices and herbs. Types of Chianti

Chianti Classico is one of the most prestigious categories. They are considered to be of exceptionally high quality and are usually marked with a black rooster symbol on the label. They are characterized by distinct red fruit flavors, well-integrated tannins and an elegant structure.

Chianti Riserva is a special category that undergoes a longer aging process compared to the standard version. To obtain the Riserva designation, Chianti wine must be aged for at least 24 months, including at least three months in bottle. Longer aging gives these wines greater flavor complexity, depth and structure.

Chianti Superiore is a category that has special requirements. It must have a higher alcohol content and a lower grape yield than standard Chianti.

Chianti Gran Selezione is the newest and highest category, introduced in 2014. These wines are considered the most exclusive and most mature. To obtain the Gran Selezione designation, the wine must come from a single vineyard or farm, and meet strict quality criteria. This wine is aged for at least 30 months, and the taste and aroma reach an exceptional level of elegance and complexity.
