Zinfandel grape - what will we feel in the glass?

Zinfandel wine owes its popularity to its distinctive aroma and taste. A good wine from the Zinfandel strain will spread before us the aroma of strongly sun-ripened darkfruits - plums (often even plum jam), heavy from the flesh dark cherries, blackberries, as well as strawberries. If the wine was additionally matured for some time in a barrel, we can also smell coffee, vanilla, chocolate or spices.

In recent times, the Zinfandel Rose style - that is, rosé wine made from this varietal - is also becoming popular. In the glass we will be delighted by aromas of ripe strawberries and raspberries.

Zinfandel in taste

It will not alienate us, neither with too high acidity, nor with intense tannins. Interestingly, despite its high alcohol, it has a large amount of residual sugar perceptible in the accompaniment of appetizing aromas of fresh, warm jam. Despite its intense flavor, Zinfandel Rose is light and pleasant to drink. Zinfandel wine will certainly work well where we do not know the taste of the guests or when we buy wine for a gift - it is a so-called safe wine. However, if the recipient is a wine connoisseur, and we know it, a simpler Zinfandel may not be complex enough. In such a situation, it is worth looking around for something special - for example, Zinfandel from more mature, older vines, labeled 'Old Vine' or from recognized regions - such as Lodi located in California.

What to serve Zinfandel wine with?

The wine is so aromatic that it will be perfect for... conversation. Among dishes, it goes best with sweeter tomato-based sauces and with pizza, pastrami, or a simple burger. If we are dealing with a more exquisite and structured liquor, it will certainly stand up to more demanding dishes - such as venison. Zinfandel Rose is best suited to fruit and drinking solo during summer picnics.

Zinfandel - price

What price should we expect under a bottle of good Zinfandel? Although wines from the Zinfandel varietal can sometimes be really cheap, with prices for wines of this varietal starting just above PLN 10, it is worth paying attention to those above PLN 30 or even PLN 40. Only here can we begin to find good aroma and taste qualities - to recognize to what extent the adventure with this strain is just for us.

We don't usually buy wines from the Zinfandel varietal for cellaring. The vast majority of these wines are wines made to be drunk young. Only a really few wines from the best producers, have a chance to improve their aromatic and flavor structure in up to 5 years.
