Historical background of Tinta RorizThere

is no clear answer as to where Tinta Roriz came from. It can be encountered that the strain was brought to Spain by monks from Burgundy traveling to Santiago de Compostela, and then spread throughout countries such as Portugal, Argentina, Mexico, the US, Australia and South Africa. There were also indications that Tinta Roriz is a mutation of the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc strains, but after DNA testing it turned out that there are no genetic ties between these strains.

Tinta Roriz is considered one of the most popular red strains around the world. The largest amount of this strain is grown in Spain, where it is the second most important variety, followed by Portugal in terms of cultivation, and then Argentina.

Tinto Roriz is a strain irreplaceable in the production of Portugal's most popular wine, which is Porto

.Characteristics of Tinta RorizThe Spanish

name of the Tinto Roriz variety, or Tempranillo, comes from the word temprano meaning early, which refers to the early ripening of the fruit. It is a rather demanding strain, due to its susceptibility to various diseases, including mold and parasite attacks. In addition, it is a shrub that is very sensitive to drought and wind.

The Tinta Roriz grape can produce varied tasting wines depending on the region. For example, in the Ribera del Duero region, the wines will be purple in color, the nose will smell of forest fruits, plus high acidity and noticeable tannins. In the Rioja region, on the other hand, the color of the wine is not as intense, the acidity much lower and the tannins less astringent. In the Toro region, Tinto Roriz wines will be the most concentrated, heavy and also very tannic. The most classic note in the wine is strawberry, in addition we can smell raspberry, black currant, as well as herbal and spicy aromas.

Tinto Roriz wine is well suited for aging in both French and American oak barrels, which gives it notes of vanilla, leather and tobacco. Tinto Roriz is a varietal that is very often found in blends. It perfectly harmonizes with such grape varieties as Grenache, Mazuelo, Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Merlot.
