Strain characteristicsIn

Europe, this strain is mainly known as Syrah. Its cradle is in the Rhone Valley, where it is often found in coupage with delicate Grenache and rich Mourvedre in the classic wines of the Cotes du Rhone. In several appellations in the northern Rhone, however, such as Cote-Rotie and Hermitage, it is the only grape used and is fully responsible for the final character of the wine. The European Syrah has a full-bodied structure, with noticeable tannins and a delicate yet perceptible acidity. The nose shows blackberries, berries, but also notes of herbs or smoke.

Wine from the Shiraz varietal has also been perfectly accepted in the New World. Outstanding proposals come from winemakers from Chile, the United States, South Africa, ending with phenomenal wines from Australia. It is in the latter country that the outstanding liquors from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale can compete with the best offerings from European Syrah-growing wine giants.

In the New World climate, Shiraz is characterized by less acidity and softer tannins, in return yielding a more jammy, dense structure. Aromas and flavors will show even more intense aromas of dark fruits, but also include notes of dark chocolate, spices, pepper, with a slightly sweet finish.

The versatile balance between the different aspects of these wines makes it a very good choice for a gathering with friends, thus reconciling many tastes. Whether the wine will be served at a barbecue or just to accompany conversations, Shiraz will be the right choice for this purpose.

It is worth noting that the Petite Sirah grape, sometimes also called Durif, is a different grape varietal and should not be confused with Syrah/Shiraz

.Pairing Shiraz wines with mealsThe

Shiraz/Syrah grape gives wines with a solid structure, with tannins and present acidity, full of aromas of dark fruits and spices. This makes them an excellent pairing for structured meats, such as beef or game, but also grilled seasoned vegetables.

An ideal pairing for Shiraz is barbecue, properly seasoned grilled meats, especially in the form of ribs. In addition, these wines are worth serving in the company of braised beef or chicken, roast lamb and pork. They also go very interestingly with steaks and hamburgers, especially adding barbecue sauce to the dish.

An interesting experiment can be the combination of Shiraz wine with grilled tuna steak, seasoned appropriately with pepper. Above all, we should avoid seafood, delicate fish and dishes emanating acidity in the combinations

.Shiraz for all occasionsThe
