Polish v

ineyardsThe first vineyards in Poland are mentioned more or less at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries. At that time, vines were cultivated in Malopolska, among other places. Today it is also an important center for Polish winemaking. The Malopolska Wine Route operates there, thanks to which one can discover the region's cultural heritage. Currently, there are many vineyards located in the vicinity of Krakow, but in addition, excellent wines from Poland are also made in the provinces: Lubuskie, Podkarpackie, Zachodniopomorskie, Mazovia and even Lower Silesia. Most of them encourage you not only to discover the wine, but also the very place where it is made. Wineries offer tastings with a tour or even a stay.

Promotion of Polish winesThere

has been an Association of Polish Sommeliers in Poland since 2001. The members call themselves a community of people who have dedicated themselves to passion and work for wine. The association promotes wine culture in Poland and patronizes the most important wine events. Among others, such as the Polish Wine Competition in Jaslo. Held once a year since 2014, it is entirely devoted exclusively to Polish wines. They are judged during a blind tasting by awarding points on a 100-point scale. The jury includes the best Polish sommeliers.

A slightly different event that also promotes Polish wines is the annual Grape Harvest Festival in Zielona Gora. It takes place in September, just after the harvest in the vineyards. The several-day event is full of attractions: concerts, fashion shows, theatrical performances. All this accompanied by wine, which plays a central role during these days. There is a trade fair with a presentation of local products, as well as a Wineobrani Wine Competition.

What wines are made in Poland?

Although it seems that Poland offers rather difficult climatic conditions, a wide variety of wines are produced on its territory. There are white, red and rosé wines. You can even come across Polish sparkling wine. Popular grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir are grown, as well as lesser-known ones. Among such is, for example, Jutrzenka. It is a Polish white wine variety. It can withstand frosts as low as -24 degrees. Its fruit yields fresh wines with aromas of mint, black currant and white pepper. It is even grown outside our country. Other not-yet-popular grapes that are grown in Poland include the white Solaris, an aromatic grape with low acidity, or the red Rondo, with a pleasant cherry aroma.

Where to buy Polish wines?

Some of the vineyards in Poland are run as a hobby. They do not produce wines for sale, but only for their own use. So, where to buy them? More and more often you can find Polish wines in stores, especially specialized ones with a wide range of products. Prices of Polish wines can also vary widely.
