Moscato strain

The strain thriveswell in dry and windy climates. Moscato grapes are characterized by a long life cycle (lasting from early spring to autumn), compact clusters of small berries and great aromatics in taste. We find scents of musk, peaches, sage, nutmeg, lime, honey and white flowers. Early-ripening grapes have high sugar levels at harvest, producing wines with sweet citrus and stone fruit flavors. The grape also has a wide range of synonyms due to its use not only in Europe, but also in the New World and some regions of radical Asia.

The history of the moscato grape?

Nowadays, the country of origin of Moscato wine is usually Italy, but the history of this grape goes back to antiquity, with the first references dating back to 1300. It is likely that the grape originated in the region of the Mediterranean Sea and was brought to Italy during the colonization of the Greeks. Moscato served to satisfy the needs of the most affluent classes, giving them Moscato wine distinguished from others. Over time, it spread throughout the Apennine Peninsula and reached as far as Piedmont. Today, it is grown in almost all regions of Italy (30,000 hectares), most notably in the aforementioned Piedmont, where it has found a fertile environment, both in terms of soil characteristics and the commercial choices made by the politicians of the era.

Moscato - varieties of the grape

  • Moscato Bianco grapes - the most prized and most widely grown variety in Italy that likes dry and windy areas. These are also produced in other regions of Europe (Spain, France, Germany, Greece).
  • Zibibbo grape (also called Moscato di Alessandria or Moscatellone) - popular in the Mediterranean, brought to Italy by the Arabs. Very aromatic in flavor, the variety is now used to make passito-style wines (air-dried grapes).
  • Moscato Giallo grape - country of origin is the Trentino-Alto Adige region, in northeastern Italy. The flavor has a musky touch, which is characteristic of most moscato varieties. It is most often used to make sweet wines in passito style (air-dried grapes).
  • Moscato Rosa grape - most commonly found in northeastern Italy, especially in the alpine region of Trentino-Alto Adige. It is commonly used to make sweet wines, and these tend to be very aromatic, with notes of sweet spices, berries and rose.

Lesser-known varieties in the world include Moscato di Terracina (Lazio), the black variety Moscato di Scanzo (Valcalepio), or the product Moscato Selvatico (Puglia).

Moscato wines

The most popular products are Moscato d'Asti (semi-sparkling) and Asti Spumante (sparkling). These are classic Italian examples, having the highest DOCG classification in Italy. The best wines are highly aromatic and sweet in taste, with perfectly balanced and thrilling acidity, bubbles and a clean, mineral finish. The alcohol content is also at a good level. On the palate, Moscato wine is light, always compact, with an agile and elegant structure, medium freshness and low minerality.

Theprice of Mosc ato is really varied. As a result, we will find an interesting proposition not only for everyday gatherings, but also a strong proposal for a gift.

Pairing Moscato wine with food?

With a good alcohol content, Moscato wine will go well with light desserts, fruits and citrus-based sweets and sorbets. It will go well with strongly aromatic Italian dishes and with a board of tasty mountain cheeses. The Moscato D'Asti product is a sweet wine, but acidic enough to pair with salads and spicier Asian food. We also recommend serving it as an aperitif at the end of a meal - ideal. Such an aperitif will be a pleasant culmination of any dish. Need help with your selection? Do you have questions? Write to us.
