Vinho Verde does not have a good reputation for its low price - and indeed, one can sometimes be disappointed and discouraged when buying an unfamiliar Loureiro wine. However, a well-made Vinho Verde will impress with its fruitiness, freshness and showcase the artistry of the varietals it contains. We invite you to take a look at one great white wine featuring Loureiro, where detailed descriptions, high-quality photos and feedback from our customers will help you choose

.Characteristics of the varietalThe name

Loureiro gets its origin from the word "laurel," referring to the scent of the flowers of evergreen laurel bushes. Loureiro wines are very aromatic, distinctive, interesting and complex. In addition to notes of laurel leaves, the wines are full of citrus, distinct mineral flavors, captivate with powerful fruitiness and have very refreshing acidity. They exhibit orange and lime blossoms, acacia, lime blossoms, peach fruit, green apples, lychee and melon. Loureiro wines tend to be refreshing, with well-balanced acidity and low alcohol content. They are best drunk young, because as they age, they tend to lose their complexity, minerality and freshness. Occasionally, however, you can find such a single-varietal gem that can age wonderfully, revealing notes of smoke, kerosene, dried fruit and honey. Traditionally, Loureiro wines are very often used in blends with Arinto, Alvarinho or Trajadura. Nowadays, this very vigorous, high-yielding variety has finally lived up to its status as a "noble", quality varietal.

Genetic studies also suggest that Loureiro wines have a long history, and the first references to them can be found in documents from the 18th century. Loureiro is a rather demanding variety in terms of cultivation. The fruit ripens quite early, the variety is susceptible to diseases, so it requires a lot of attention and experience from winemakers. Ideally adapted to the coastal, cooler areas of Spain and Portugal, it is also common along the Lima River. It is the most widely grown white grape variety in the Vinho Verde appellation.

Recently, Loureiro wines have also been made with a bit of added carbon dioxide to create a frizzante style wine. The combination of crispness, fruitiness, minerality with a touch of bubbles contributes to a wine ideal as an aperitif, for light dishes, casual gatherings or as refreshment on warm spring and summer days. It will be perfect as an accompaniment to mussels steamed with white wine, green salads with shrimp or dishes with lentils and tomatoes. However, the importance of Loureiro wines should not be forgotten or belittled - properly made, it becomes a serious wine, giving much pleasure and suitable for long, slow tastings. To quote Jonathan Nossiter: "Loureiro is a grape so light and subtle that it makes Audrey Hepburn look heavy."
