The origins of mulled wine date back even to the Middle Ages. Even back then, nobles, bishops and kings sipped this beverage. Mulled wine was even considered a cure for upper respiratory tract. Perhaps that is why to this day, especially while on a sleigh ride, we can treat ourselves to mulled wine to warm up. Drinking a mug of mulled wine will make us feel pleasantly warm, relaxed and in a better mood within minutes.

A brief historical outline of mulled wine

The origins of mulled wine date back even to the Middle Ages. Even then, nobles, bishops and kings were already sipping this beverage.

What wine to choose for mulled wine?

In most cases we choose red wine, preferably semi-dry or semi-sweet. In particular, it is worth reaching for such strains as Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Merlot. These strains contain the most antioxidants, which has an additional health-promoting effect. The red wine itself has a strong aroma, so it will be ideal for mulled wine, as simply warming the wine a little will flatten the aromas for us. However, there is no definition that only red wine can be the wine for mulled wine. However, when choosing white wine, you should be aware that it will be a little less aromatic. For mulled white wine, you can use Chardonnay.

How to prepare mulled wine?

Mulled wine, as the name suggests, should be warm. However, it should be remembered that during heating it cannot be boiled. The temperature during heating should be between 60?C-80?C. One must be very careful not to bring the wine to boiling point. Although ready-made mulled wine is becoming more and more popular, which does not need additional seasoning and preparation, it is also worth trying to make mulled wine yourself. The preparation process itself, will have a warming and relaxing effect on us. To prepare mulled wine, all we need is a bottle of semi-dry or semi-sweet wine, cloves, oranges, cinnamon, ginger, honey, spice and optional brandy.

How to serve mulled wine?

Mulled wine is best served in a clay or heatproof mug. Such a vessel will maintain the high temperature of the wine long enough, allowing you to enjoy the pleasure of drinking this delicious beverage for longer. In addition, pouring the wine into a suitable mug, I recommend adding to the wine a slice of orange with cloves stuck in it and a star of anise. Mulled wine will not only taste great, but will also look good.

Sample recipe for mulled wine
