Origin of grenache

It is uncertain exactly where grenache wine originated. Three countries are pointed out that could be the homeland of this varietal. These are Spain, Italy and France, where there is currently the most cultivation of this grape. The origin of the name of this grape may have to do with Italy, or more precisely, it refers to the name of the Italian town of Vernazza in Liguria. In Spain, the variety is called garnacha and is the country's third red variety - after tempranillo and bobal. Cultivation of garnacha primarily dominates the northern and eastern parts of Spain, in such wine regions as Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Ampurdán-Costa Brava, Bierzo, Costers del Segre, La Mancha, Cariñena, Navarra, Penedès, Priorat, Utiel-Requena, Vinos de Madrid., Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Somontano, Tarragona and Terra Alta. In France, on the other hand, the main growing areas are the departments of Vaucluse and Drôme, which are part of one of the most famous wine regions - the Rhone. The appellations where grenache predominates are Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Costières de Nîmes. The entire cultivation of grenache in France covers as much as 97,171 hectares, and this number continues to grow. As single-vineyard wines are rarely produced in the south of France, the varietal is often blended with syrah. With the addition of grenache, sweet, fortified wines are made in Banyuls, Beaumes-de-Venise, Maury, Rasteau and Rivesaltes in France. In Italy, it is grown as cannonau mainly in Sicily. Cultivation of cannonau in the area covers more than 6,000 hectares. It is the most important red variety in the area and the second most important in general. Grenache is planted all over the world, from Australia to the US, and totals more than 200,000 hectares. Depending on where the wine comes from, we have different names for this variety. Grenache and grenache noir are the same varietal, the names are used interchangeably. In France it is referred to as grenache or grenache noir, in Spain it is garnacha, in Catalonia it is garnatxa, and in Sardinia it is cannonau. In Sicily the strain is called Alicante, in Mallorca giró, in the Valencia area negrella. It is worth remembering that we are talking about the same grape variety all the time. In addition, there are white equivalents of this wine: grenache blanc or garnacha blanca. In California, on the other hand, rosé wine is produced from this grape.

Characteristics of grenache

Wines made from the grenache variety tend to have more alcohol, at about 14-15%. The grape yields dry wines with high acidity, juicy, and with such fruit aromas as cherries, raspberries, strawberries and plums. With grenache, the wine has little intense color. Wines from old, decades-old vines are an exception. They are more concentrated and rich. The grape is resistant to heat and drought.

Wine made from grenache grapes has a low tannin content and a low-intensity color, which also predestines the variety for processing into rosé and even white wines. This is the case, for example, in California in the United States.

Grenache couplings

Grenache is rarely found as a stand-alone wine variety, as it has a low tannin content and produces a low-intensity color. Hence it is often blended with other grape varieties. The most popular coupage involving grenache is the French Chateauneuf du Pape. These are the so-called favorite wines of the popes. They are well structured and long-lived. Grenache is the base in them, but a total of as many as 13 varietals are allowed to produce Chateauneuf du Pape! In addition, in France grenache is often blended with syrah, in Spain - with tempranillo, and in Australia it creates the so-called GSM, which is a blend of grenache, syrah and mourverde. These wines are considered the most fruity. They are characterized by a high alcohol content, but also an aftertaste of jam, vanilla and chocolate.

An interesting example of grenache coupage is medinet wine. It comes from the Eduard Ch. Tavan Winery. It is a combination of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah varietals. The medinet wine produces a sweet, red, very fruity and refreshing wine. The producer recommends serving it slightly chilled, but it tastes equally well at room temperature of 12-14 deg. It goes perfectly with desserts, but surprisingly, it will equally well conquer the taste of grilled meats or game dishes. The Medinet wine has an unusual, original bottle, which is very crackly, resembling a bit of an amphora. It contains 10.5% alcohol. Medinet wine is semi-dry, so it fits the preferences of many consumers. It comes in various capacities, there are even large liter bottles.

International grenache day

There is no shortage of lovers of grenache wine. The variety has lived to see "its" holiday, which falls on the third Friday of September. This is when we celebrate International Grenache Day. It is worth celebrating it with a glass of French grenache wine or Spanish garnacha. At Vinezia.co.uk, such wines are mainly available in coupons, at attractive prices.

When to reach for grenache wines?

Grenache can be an excellent wine for a gift. Especially in the case of such wines as Chateauneuf du Pape. It is elegant and long-lived. You can wait many long years before opening it. If you plan to buy grenache for dinner, it is best to compose it with meat dishes, for example, for venison, although lighter versions of the wine can even go well with fish, such as tuna. The resulting grenache rosé wines will go well with salads, appetizers and will work well as an aperitif. Due to their fairly high alcohol content, as for rosé wines, they will also be a good choice for light, grilled dishes.
