Greek

Wines

- strainsOne

of the most famous Greek strains is Agiorgitiko, grown in the Peloponnese region. Wines created from this grape are characterized by a rich bouquet full of plums, raspberries and nutmeg. On the tongue, the delicate, balanced acidity is complemented by elegant tannins and a dense, full-bodied structure. As a result, the wine is essential and dense, but at the same time a crisp fruitiness with a touch of spice dominates, giving it a well-balanced lightness.

Among the most important grape varieties proper, we also include Assyrtiko, which produces wines full of tropical fruit, passion fruit and citrus aromas. These are rich and complex white wines with a light minerality on the finish, which fit perfectly as part of a refreshment for a summer evening.

In ancient times, wines from Greece struggled with the typical problems of their time, namely the preservation of the liquor. Stored in clay vessels exposed to a fair amount of oxygen, they quickly spoiled. This problem was solved in two ways, by adding salt to the wine, as well as sealing the storage vessel with pine resin. The resulting beverage was salty and passed resinous flavor, but its lifespan was extended. Today, inspired by the taste of those years, Greeks produce a wine called Retsina. Often sold in smaller volumes, it serves perfectly for hot days for refreshment.

Looking for a more structured and full-bodied wine, in the style of Chardonnay, on the other hand, the Malagousia grape is worth considering. It is this grape that produces wines rich in structure, full of citrus aromas, with peach, while leaving a long, oily finish on the tongue.

Xinomavro, on the other hand, is a grape that offers wines with high tannins and high acidity, dense and structured, with aromas of cherry, licorice and spice. Thanks to its characteristics, it is sometimes compared to Italian Nebbiolo. Like its Piedmontese "cousin," it is suitable for longevity in the wine cellar.

Dessert wines from GreeceOne

of the more popular Greek dessert wines is Muscat of Samos in the Vin Doux version. Concentrated and very sweet, with dominant aromas of flowers and lychee, with a touch of grape distillate, so that high alcohol is also present in the glass. It can be a great complement to cakes such as honey cake with pudding mix.

Another popular sweet Greek wine is Mavrodaphne, made from late harvest grapes, for greater sugar concentration and to achieve a natural sweetness that balances perfectly with the tannins and acidity in the glass. Greek wines on the Wine.co.uk website are represented by Semeli winery. Among its labels you will find a dry coupage of Syrah from Agiorgitiko and Sauvignon Blanc from Moschofilero, as well as something for enthusiasts of dessert flavors - a sweet pure Agiorgitiko and a blend of Roditis from Moschofilero.

Prices of wines from GreeceOne

of the extremely favorable arguments that Greek wines manifest are the prices. Both simple wines for everyday consumption, as well as those with powerful structure and long-term aging potential, ending with exceptional dessert wines, are characterized by a favorable price-quality ratio, adapted to every pocket. With that said, it would be all the more of a shame not to try and learn about the tradition and history behind Greek wines, one of the forerunners of the culture of European vinification of the vine proper.
