What is brandy?

Brandy is a high-proof alcohol distilled from wine or fermented fruit juices, enjoyed worldwide. The name "brandy" comes from the Dutch term "brandewijn," which translates as "burnt wine," perfectly reflecting the distillation process that gives the drink its characteristic flavor and aroma. There are different types of brandy depending on the region it comes from and the raw materials used in production.

Where does brandy come from?

The production of brandy dates back to the 14th century in Europe, with its roots in Spain and France. It was there that wine began to be distilled to preserve it longer and facilitate transport. France, especially the Cognac region, quickly gained a reputation as a producer of some of the highest quality brandy in the world. Other countries, such as Spain, Italy, Greece, and even New World countries like the United States, also began producing their versions of brandy. Today, brandy is produced in many regions, each adding unique qualities to the taste and character of the alcohol.

What is brandy made of?

Brandy is made by distilling wine or fermented fruit juices. Grapes are most commonly used, but brandy made from apples (e.g., Calvados), pears, apricots, plums, and other fruits is also popular. In the production process, the quality of the fruit and the fermentation process are crucial, determining the richness of flavors and aromas. After distillation, brandy is usually aged in wooden barrels, which gives it depth of flavor and a rich color. Aging can last from several years to even decades, and the longer the process, the more refined and complex it becomes.

How to drink brandy?

The best way to drink brandy depends on personal preferences, although there are several commonly accepted rules that help fully appreciate its qualities.

  • Neat brandy: Brandy is most often served at room temperature in special glasses with a characteristic shape, which allow the aromas to concentrate. The glass with brandy should be held in the hand to slightly warm the alcohol, which releases its full bouquet of aromas. It is important to sip it slowly, enjoying its complexity.
  • Brandy on ice: Some prefer to drink brandy with ice, which gently softens its intensity and makes it more refreshing. Additionally, ice can help subtly dilute the brandy, which can bring out certain flavors.
  • Cocktails with brandy: Brandy is also a great ingredient in many cocktails. Popular brandy-based cocktails offer a wide range of flavors—from sweet to dry, often with the addition of fruits, spices, or liqueurs. Cocktails with brandy are perfect for special occasions or as a unique accent in a home bar.
  • Brandy as a digestif: Traditionally, brandy is served at the end of a meal as a digestif, an alcohol that aids digestion. In this case, it is often accompanied by coffee or dessert, and its aromatic profile pairs well with chocolate or fruit.
