Merlot wines

The Merlot strain is one of the most popular grape varieties. It is believed to have originated in Bordeaux, and it is France that is undoubtedly the kingdom of Merlot - it is grown there on more than one hundred thousand hectares, accounting for half of the world's production. Gradually, Merlot also began to occur in other areas of Europe, outside France. Thus, large acreages of this grape are grown in the northeastern part of Italy, and it is one of the most common varieties in the vineyards of Chile. It has also appeared in Australia, New Zealand, America and Africa. The best quality Merlot wines, concentrated and aromatic, come from vineyards located high and on steep slopes, where the vines struggle to survive.

The name of the Merlot varietal is a diminutive of the Old French word "merle," meaning blackbird. These birds are very fond of the grapes of this grape, and the bluish, almost black color of the grapes, resembles the color of their feathers.

Taste and aroma of Merlot wine

The country of origin has a significant impact on the taste and aroma of the wine. This Merlot strain can give a wine that is quite acidic with fruity notes, crisp and fresh - this style of Merlot wines comes from grapes grown in cooler climates. Merlot can also present us with a sweeter wine (you can even get a semi-dry wine), fuller, milder in flavor-this, however, is the style of Merlot wines from warmer climates. This grape is often compared to Cabernet Savignon or Cabernet Franc, especially because of its Bordeaux connections, sometimes it can also achieve a character similar to Tempranillo, but in some places it can also resemble.... Pinot Noir.

However, it is worth noting that regardless of the style and country of origin of Merlot wine, it is a versatile and easily drinkable wine, delicate and soft, and the taste is fruity, smooth and full. It captivates with sweet aromas of compote, currants, berry jam, black cherries, raspberries, chocolate and figs. Merlot wines from New Vistula also contain flavors of plums, berries with hints of violets and coffee, cherry and blackberry will also appear, while Merlot aged in American oak barrels is characterized by herbal notes of dill, cedarwood as well as hints of caramel.

Merlot is a variety whose wine taste is characterized by softness, aromatics and a fruity aftertaste. This red wine is very mild, and thanks to its low tannin content and acidity, it is an excellent choice for those who avoid red wines on a daily basis, due to their sharp character. Tasting notes characteristic of this variety include plum, chocolate, vanilla or roasted coffee. We also find aromas of cherry, blackberry, smoked plum, strawberry and pepper.

Merlot coupage with other varietals

Merlot on its own can be interesting, complex and rich in aroma and flavor, but it also works well in coupage with other varietals. It is most often combined with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Montepulciano or Nebbiolo. Wines based on the Merlot varietal are characterized by elegant reds, although the color palettes from each region range from ruby to intense garnet, and the wine itself is extremely varied. It softens and rounds out the aggressive notes of the varieties with which it is paired.

Pairing Merlot wine with food

Merlot will go perfectly with a variety of dishes, regardless of the region from which it comes. Thanks to its delicate structure and acidity, it goes well with roasted and stewed dishes, and Merlot proponents also serve it with Mediterranean dishes. Because of its mild and soft tannins, it can also be served with tomato-based dishes, such as those from Italian cuisine. It will also become an ideal companion to Chinese-style sweet and sour sauce and some Indian dishes. Thus, Merlot goes well with both risotto and pasta dishes. It is a very gastronomically versatile wine that can also be drunk solo.
