Initially, it was divided primarily into zones distinguished from north to south. The next stage, which took place several years ago, was the division of the country from east to west, into three more zones. The final stage, which continues to this day, is the identification of the best habitats. Today's shape seems definitive in this regard, while it should be remembered that the outermost areas, despite their sizable areas, are covered with vineyards to a minimal degree, and the main driving force of Chilean winemaking is the zones north and south of the country's capital.

Chile uses the Denominacion de Origen designation for its regions and habitats, but - as is the case with other countries on other continents - these are not recognized in the European Union and cannot be put on labels. The case is different with the terms Reserva and Gran Reserva, which mainly refer to the maximum yield per hectare and the required time and manner of maturation of the wines, varying according to their color.

Grape Varieties and Characteristics of Chilean WinesThe recent

history of Chile has been, in addition to learning about and clarifying the characters of the local habitats, also searching for and matching the most suitable varieties to them. This has had interesting consequences of sorts, such as the discovery of the strain - the country's icon - Carmenere, as well as the correct identification of previously mislabeled varieties found in the vineyards.

Among Chilean wines on the Wine.co.uk website, red wine varietals dominate. The king, of course, is Cabernet Sauvignon - a noble, robust and full-bodied wine. It delights with its acidity, enchants with notes of currants, cherries and graphite. This is a wine with wonderful aromas when young and a wonderful bouquet when mature. Enjoying in the evening a full-bodied Ventisquero Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Colchagua Valley, which pleases the eye with its dark and deep color with violet highlights, is simply a pleasure. The aroma is led by ripe plum, vanilla and fresh tobacco. That this is a good Chilean wine is evidenced by the reviews of our users, who rave about the taste, aroma and color of this liquor.

The second place among the most popular varietals is occupied by Carménére, which has a thousand faces. It can be delicate and light, as well as deep and strong. It carries green and earthy notes, mixed with aromas of chocolate and cherry jam. Casablanca Cefiro Carmenere is a perfect example.

The lighter, sweeter Merlot, which smells of raspberries, blackberries and chocolate, should not be overlooked either. And finally, Pinot Noir - a pleasant, fresh, delicate though often complex wine that has also found its place in this beautiful corner of the world.

The field of white Chilean wines has been somewhat neglected, but in recent years very successful attempts to break this trend are beginning to hit the road. Leading the way are fresh Sauvignon Blanc and creamy Chardonnay. There are dozens of items on the site, and each deserves a closer look. However, the wide range can cause problems when choosing, so we offer a little advice. The reviews of Chilean wines by our users, which you will find on the product sheets, can help you with your purchase. It is worth checking what emotions and memories a particular wine has left behind.

Wine regionsThe most important

regions of the country, yielding the largest number of wines and wines leading in quality are:
  • Aconcagua - this zone north of Santiago produces Chile's best and most prized white wines Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The local valleys of Aconcagua, San Antonio and especially the cooler climate of the Casablanca Valley are perfectly conducive to creating elegant wines with a classic profile of aromas and structure.
  • Central Valley - the realm of Chile's best red wines and the granary of the country. Local, quite warm or hot climatic conditions allow the grapes to mature brilliantly and concentrate the compounds responsible for the structure and expression of the wines. The Rapel Valley is primarily famous for its excellent Carmenere, while the Maipo, Curico, Cachapoal, Curico and Maule valleys are famous for wines of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah varieties (although all these varieties are found side by side throughout the Central Valley zone).
