Single Malt whisky is made in a single distillery from a specified type of raw material, which is usually barley malt. This type of whisky owes its popularity above all to Scotland - the kingdom of this liquor, which is also home to the most famous distilleries that can boast outstanding distillates of this type. Although, of course, this is not the only place where Single Malt Whisky is made - counterparts can also be found in India, Ireland (Whiskey Single Malt), USA, Japan, Canada and even... in Poland! Inspired by Scottish tradition, but at the same time looking for their own style, they are currently enjoying unflagging interest from consumers around the world. What is the difference between Single Malt Whisky and other types?

Since you will find many types of designations on whisky labels, you can very quickly come to a confounding moment abounding with question marks. To better understand Single Malt Whisky it is worth knowing the other designations as well:
- Single Malt Whisky - a blend of malt whisky made at a single distillery
- Blended Whisky - a blend of whiskies from different distilleries made from malted barley and grains
- Blended Malt Whisky - a blend of whiskies from different distilleries made from malted barley
- Single Grain Whiskey - Whisky made from grains of various kinds, including barley, corn or wheat at a single distillery

Single Malt Whisky ProductionThe production

of Single Malt Whisky is not much different from the processes of other types of whisky: fermentation with yeast, sugars turning into alcohol and the liquid distilled into a concentrated alcoholic beverage. This is followed by a stage of maturation, blending and bottling.

So-called "malt whisky" is made from barley whose grains are malted in water, resulting in a germination process, and this increases the grains' susceptibility to fermentation. Single Malt whisky must use malted grains, while unmalted grains are used in the production of other types of this distillate.

Peat wh

iskyPeat whisky, which uses peat malt, is also becoming increasingly popular. This one is obtained by drying barley on local peat. This imparts an unusual smoky and smoky flavor to the whisky. One of the legendary places where many peated whiskies are made is the Scottish island of Islay, and one of its leading producers - Ardbeg.

Blending, and Single MaltBlending

(or so-called blending) is a natural process in the production of many spirits, and it is no different in the case of Single Malt whisky. This is because it is worth remembering that this type of distillate is produced at a single distillery, and not, as it may seem, from a single barrel or a single "batch." By the same token, Single Malt Whisky is also most often a blend - if only of distillates from different barrels from different years. This approach makes the taste of a given whisky repeatable, as each batch can be blended to be as close as possible to the distinctive taste to which our taste buds are already accustomed and with which we associate our favorite label.

Single Malt whisky taste characteristicsThe taste of

whisky depends on a number of factors. In the case of Single Malt, the raw material is always malted barley, but nevertheless the terroir - the microclimate of a place - influences many nuances. This is why whiskies from specific regions usually have a certain distinctive style - such as a slight saltiness in the case of regions close to the ocean, or the lightness of distillates from the Highlands. Further down the line, the flavor is also influenced by the length of time the distillate has been aged in barrels, as well as the type of barrels - wine or other spirits barrels are often used for the finish, which adds an extra touch of personality to the whisky's profile.

The most common aromas are those derived precisely from the raw material and maturation - oak, wood, caramel and vanilla notes - as well as fruit notes, but these can already vary significantly. Some will be fresh and citrusy, others - full of dried and candied fruits. The final style of the distillery is achieved by the right proportions of maturing distillates, from which the result is consistent with the production vision.

Because of the appropriate maturity of the taste of Single Malt Whisky, it is customary to taste them in special glasses, which concentrate the aromas and allow a more precise analysis of the chosen distillate. Although it is not a rule, Blended Whisky is much more often chosen for cocktails. Nevertheless, the flavor profile of Single Malts also fits deliciously with drinks. It is worth noting, for example, X by Glenmorangie -Single Malt Whisky prepared specifically for blending.

Single Malt Whisky - priceWhisky

Single Malt used to be considered a more prestigious product than traditional Blended

Whisky

. This is influenced by the use of a specific raw material and production concentrated in about one distillery, as well as often a longer maturation process before bottling. For this reason, whiskies of this class most often cost more than 100 zlotys, although the upper limit is naturally not established and you can pay even several thousand zlotys for a bottle of prestigious Single Malt Whisky.
