Ukraine is not a country whose wines are internationally popular, but the wines are worth tasting. It is safe to say that Ukraine is a "black horse" in the wine world. Of the national strains, we can mention Telti Kuruk - a white variety with refreshing acidity and a rich aroma of white flowers. Sukholimansky - also a white strain from which very aromatic wines are made. Of the red strains, a special mention should be made of Odesa Black with a strong aroma of spices and rich color.

History of Ukrainian winesGeographically

, Ukraine has very good conditions for growing grapes. Fertile soil, terrain, sea, mountains - these are very good conditions for cultivation and wine production. However, wines from Ukraine have not had an easy road to travel. Various kinds of restrictions, bans, anti-alcohol campaigns. All of this contributed to the diminution of viticulture. The situation improved after the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which allowed wholesale trade for "smaller" winemakers. Then a large number of new producers, who had previously been blocked by fees, entered the market.

Wine regions and grape varietiesOnce

upon a time, the most internationally recognized Ukrainian wineries were located around Crimea. At the time, the Crimean Peninsula was Ukraine's most important wine region, followed by Odessa Oblast and Zakarpattya. The year 2014 changed quite a lot and 43,000 hectares of vineyards remain out of the 75,000 hectares, and wines created in the Crimean region are imported to Russia. Currently, the only wine regions Ukraine is famous for are Transcarpathia, Odessa Oblast and Koblevo, located on the Black Sea.

Transcarpathia is a very distinctive wine region of Ukraine considered one of the most important. It is also the area with the oldest wine tradition. It is located in the southwest of the country, right at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, which protect the vineyards from the dry eastern and cold northern winds. The climate there is very conducive to viticulture. It is temperate continental, with average precipitation while summers are long and warm and winters are mild and short. In addition, the soil found there is rich in minerals and water. Wines from Transcarpathia are considered natural and healthy and the region has been recognized as suitable for making organic wines. Wine-making in Transcarpathia has had its ups and downs. Back in the days of the Ottoman Empire, Transcarpathia was affected by restrictions and even bans. The situation began to improve after the end of Turkish rule in the region and countries such as France, Italy and Germany, from where seedlings were imported, contributed to the development of Ukrainian wines.

The kingdom of wines from Ukraine is recognized Koblevo. It is a region located on the Black Sea. There are very good conditions for growing grapes there. Mild climate, a very large amount of sunshine per year, good soil and large temperature differences between day and night. The vineyards are located basically right next to the Black Sea, the grapes are harvested by hand and no artificial casting is used by law. This region is primarily famous for Muscat, and wines from this part of Ukraine are very aromatic, fruity and mild.

Another region is Odessa Oblast. This region grows the most grapevines, although previously Crimea boasted the largest number of vines. Odessa Oblast has very good conditions for viticulture. On one side it is surrounded by the Black Sea, and on the other it has access to the largest freshwater lake in Ukraine - Yalpuh. Thanks to the sloping vineyards, the cultivated vines get a double dose of sunlight - directly from the sun and that reflected from the water surface. In addition, the clay-sandy soil rich in minerals adds value to the vines and the green harvesting carried out by pruning the vines results in a smaller yield but more saturated flavor and aroma. It allows the grapes to accumulate more sugar, which has an impact on the quality of the wine. One of the most popular strains found in this part of Ukraine is Odessa Black. It is a cross between the Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouchet strains.

Ukrainian wine stores offer affordable prices starting from as little as $20, making it a reasonable and interesting choice for everyday occasions.
