History of Slovak winesIn

the territory of today's Slovakia, wine was probably cultivated even earlier than the Romans - as early as the 6th century BC. Historically, grape cultivation reached 40,000 hectares, and the oldest wine cellars date back to the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, today's Bratislava was an important wine center. In its vicinity, sweet fig-scented wines were made, comparable to today's Tokaj. The Bratislava area also became famous for the production of sparkling wines. They were produced here using the same method as champagne. The country owes their presence to Napoleonic soldier Hubert, who, while in Bratislava, fell in love with a woman and Slovak wines. It was he who was the first to establish a sparkling wine factory.

The Wine Landscape of SlovakiaAlthough

Slovakia is a country 6 times smaller than Poland, wine consumption there is 4 times higher. There are also more vineyards there, despite the fact that the country is a mountainous area. For this reason, vineyards are located only in the southern part of the country, in a 500-kilometer stretch along the border with Austria and Hungary. There are six wine regions: the Lesser Carpathian, South Slovak, Nitrzan, Central Slovak, East Slovak and Tokaj. The most important centers are Pezinok in the Lesser Carpathians, Sered' famous for its sparkling wines, and Tokaj in the very east of the country.

Slovak TokajIn

the Slovak territories, methods of drying grapes and producing sweet wines similar in style to Tokaj have long been known - although such wine is associated with Hungary. However, it must meet all Hungarian quality standards to use the name Tokaj. Hence such Slovak wine is made from the same varieties as on the other side of the border: furmint, lipovina and muscat lunel. Tokaj can be dry (tokajské samorodné suché) or sweet (tokajské samorodné sladké). Based on the timing of the grape harvest, Slovak Tokaj can be divided into: early harvest (kabinetné), late harvest, i.e., fully ripe grapes picked at the end of the harvest (neskorý zber), bobul harvest, i.e., fruit picked from overripe grapes (bobužový zber), raisin selection, i.e., overripe and partially dried fruit (hrozienkový výber), ice harvest, i.e., overripe fruit picked only when the temperature drops below -7°C (ladový zber). In addition, Tokaj is divided into puttons. The more puttons a wine has, the sweeter it is. Tokaj Aszú in Hungary has its counterpart in Slovakia - Tokajské Véber. The wine has an intense color and an exceptionally sweet taste, rated by some as the best in the world.

What wines are produced in Slovakia?

Slovak wines are primarily white varieties. They account for 80% of the wines in Slovakia. Among single-varietal wines, the popular ones are riesling (rizling vlaąskè), Rhenish riesling (rizling rènsky), silvaner (silvánske zelené) and also veltliner (veltlínske zelené). In addition, it produces wines from several varieties, including grapes of foreign origin. Slovak wines of the highest quality have special designations: víno s chráneným zemepisným označením - they are made from domestic grapes. On the label of such wine you can find information about the vintage and the region.

Where to buy Slovak wines?

You should certainly try Slovak wines. Stores that have them in their offer, in addition to the very proposal of bottles, will certainly advise which and for what occasion to choose. It is not necessary to go abroad for this purpose. In Poland, such wines are available in good specialty stores.
